Tarleton guard Tahj Small transfers to Utah Valley

OREM—Utah Valley head coach Mark Madsen has announced that Tarleton guard Tahj Small has transferred to Utah Valley and will play for the Wolverines this upcoming season.

"I am incredibly excited to welcome Tahj Small and his family to Utah Valley University," said Madsen. "We know Tahj extremely well because he has been one of the top players in the conference for the past two years. It wasn't just the scoring and defense that stood out. It was all the intangibles that Tahj brought to the table every single game—the leadership, the hustle, and the focus. Tahj will be a huge piece of what we do this season and our fan base will embrace him."

Small, a 6-foot-5 guard, played the past two seasons at Tarleton where he earned All-WAC honors during the 2020-21 season. He averaged 13.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game during the 2021-22 season for the Texans. Small scored double figures in 23 of his 29 games last season and scored 20 or more points in five games. He scored a career-high 28 points in a win over Sam Houston. In his two seasons at Tarleton, Small averaged 12.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He shot 44.8 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from long range.

The Durham, North Carolina native played his sophomore campaign at Troy during the 2019-20 season where he played 29 games with 14 starts. He averaged 4.6 points and 3.8 rebounds in 16.2 minutes per game. He scored in double figures six times.

Small played his freshman season (2018-19) at Moberly Area Community College where he averaged 14.3 points per game and shot 45 percent from the floor. He also averaged 6.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists and was named all-conference and all-district. He knocked down a team-high 93 shots from beyond the arc for MACC. Small is a 2017 graduate of Word of God Academy.
