OREM, Utah — Utah Valley dropped the final game of its non-conference schedule, 10-5, to BYU in the UCCU Crosstown Clash on Wednesday.
Madison Carr moved into a tie for the single season hits record with No. 65 on the season with an RBI base hit in the third. The Wolverines (20-24) got a pair of doubles from Danyé Albritton and a home run from
Rylee Thorpe, but the Cougars (35-10) combined to hit five home runs — including three in a row in the fifth — to win their 10th straight contest.
BYU scored three times in the first, third and fifth innings. All three runs in the first came after there were two outs and nobody on. Violet Zavodnik pulled a ball just inside the line to right for her first of two home runs in the game for the first run. Zavodnik also tripled and scored in the third while Marissa Chavez also hitting a two-run home run in the inning to give BYU a 6-0 lead. Zavodnik was 3-for-3 in the game.
The Wolverines put up four runs in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of three walks and an error while sending 10 hitters to the plate.
Jaeden Barajas, Carr and
Kalena Shepherd all singled in the inning, with both Carr and Shepherd producing runs with their hits. Thorpe had a sacrifice fly to bring in a run and
Megan Gibbs also walked with the bases loaded to force in the fourth run.
In the fifth, Zavodnik, Ava, and Alyssa Podhurcak went back-to-back-to-back to help the Cougars pull away. Ava, who was 4-for-4 with three RBIs, had an RBI single in the seventh for BYU before Thorpe hit a one-out home run in the bottom of the seventh for UVU.
The Wolverines are now set to close out the WAC regular season with a three-game series against New Mexico State beginning Friday at noon MT. The teams will also play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon. Following Saturday's WAC contest, the league will release the bracket for next week's conference tournament, to be played at Sam Houston in Huntsville, Texas beginning May 11.
