OREM, Utah — Utah Valley wrapped up the WAC regular season with a series win after earning a doubleheader split against New Mexico State, 8-5 and 8-9, on Senior Day from Wolverine Softball Field.
Senior
Madison Carr added to her school-record hit total with a pair of three-hit games while also stealing four bases, three of which came in game one. Carr was 10-for-14 (.714) in the series with five runs scored and five stolen bases. She finished the WAC regular season with a .506 batting average in conference play.
Both
Mikaela Thomson and
Rylee Thorpe hit three-run home runs over the course of the twin bill, with Thomson's giving her a team-high 12 along with 49 RBIs on the year.
Following the doubleheader, Utah Valley honored its eight graduating seniors. In addition to Carr and Thomson,
Jordan Freas,
Kyla Hardy,
Rien Milliken,
Karleigh Olsen,
Peyton Prigge, and Linnah Rebollodo were also recognized.
Game 1
New Mexico State got a three-run home run from Paige Knight in the top of the second to jump ahead, 3-0. The Wolverines came back with four in the third, starting with a bunt single and stolen base from Carr.
Linnah Rebolledo singled her home and was at second when
Kalena Shepherd walked to set up Thomson's three-run shot to left that gave UVU a 4-3 lead.
The Wolverines got two more in the fourth to push it to a 6-3 lead. With one out, Carr reached on another bunt single and again stole second. Rebolledo was hit by a pitch and both runners moved up after a groundout to first before Shepherd singled both runners home with a base hit to left.
Kayla Bowen hit the Aggies' second home run of the day, a solo shot on a no-doubter to left. UVU got a pair of insurance runs with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of an error that allowed an extra run to come in.
Karleigh Olsen drove in a run in the inning and the Wolverines led 8-4 after six.
Jillian Taylor hit an opposite field home run for New Mexico State in the seventh, but UVU starter
Brooke Carter retired the next two hitters to end it and pick up her 11
th win.
In addition to the multi-hit games from Carr and Thomson,
Peyton Prigge also had two hits for Utah Valley.
Game 2
The Aggies scored first for the third straight game in the series, scoring four times in the top of the first inning. With two down and a runner at second, NM State hit five straight singles with four different players driving in a run each.
The Wolverines had a two-out rally of their own in the third when Carr singled on a bunt and Rebolledo walked before Thorpe's fourth home run of the season, a three-run homer to left, made it a 4-3 game.
A two-out infield single and a wild pitch allowed the Aggies to add two more runs in the fourth, to take a 6-3 lead. UVU got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when
Megan Gibbs' liner ricocheted off the glove of the shortstop and allowed
Jordan Freas, who led off the inning with a base hit, to score. The Aggies responded again though, when Riley Carley hit a two-run home run in top of the fifth to give NM State an 8-4 lead.
The Aggies took a 9-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth, when Utah Valley took advantage of two-out error to tack on two additional runs for a three-run inning. Rebolledo had an RBI for the first run and
Jordan Freas delivered a two-run base hit up the middle that took an advantageous hop for the Wolverines.
UVU got a run in the seventh, after another error extended the inning, but Felicia De La Torre got a strikeout to end it, stranding Thorpe at second as the potential tying run. De La Torre got the save after entering in the fifth with the potential tying run on deck and was able to finish the game.
The Wolverines will be the No. 5 seed in next week's WAC Tournament and play a single-elimination game against No. 8 seed Lamar in the first game on Wednesday. The winner would move into the double elimination portion of the tournament, which begins later that day against the No. 4 seed.
