Corvallis, ORE. — The Utah Valley men's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw on the road against the No. 5 Oregon State Beavers Monday night at Paul Lorenz Field. Beaver goalkeeper Luis Castillo saved all five shots on goal, including a pair of diving saves to deny Ura Miura, who created plenty of scoring opportunities for the Wolverines.
"Really thrilled with the 90 minutes the boys put in," said head coach Kyle Beckerman. "It was a great test against a top five program. We'll keep trying to improve each game and we're already looking forward to our next game to keep getting better."
Utah Valley out-shot the Beavers on goal five to two. Oregon State had 10 corner kicks and 12 total shots, five of which were blocked by the stellar Wolverine back line.
The Wolverine's high press gave the Beavers fits from the start, with the Wolverines dominating possession for most of the first 20 minutes. Ura Miura nearly got Utah Valley on the board in the 9th minute off of a cross from Mateo Palomino. Miura shook off his defender and drove into the penalty area, where his left-footed effort was pushed over the crossbar by Luis Castillo.
Oregon State had a pair of chances in the 35th and 37th minutes, but the first shot was saved by Jason Smith and the second was blocked by Nico Torres. Alejandro Silva nearly caught Luis Castillo off his line in the 39th minute with a long-range shot from about 40 yards out, but the Beaver keeper swatted the ball away just before it got to the top-left corner.
Straight out of halftime the Wolverines nearly broke the deadlock when Miura crossed the ball in at the near post, but it was barely too high for an unmarked Aaron Nixon. Miura again put pressure on Luis Castillo in the 57th minute when he was led on goal by a through ball from Nixon, but Miura's left-footed strike was parried away once again.
Diego Castillo ripped off a long-range shot of his own in the 75th minute from about 25 yards out, but Luis Castillo tipped it away for a corner kick. Owen Knecht and Ben Ortiz had quality scoring opportunities in the 85th and 86th minutes respectively, but Knecht fired his shot wide left and Ortiz's shot was dealt with easily by the keeper.
The Wolverines will continue their Pacific Northwest road trip with a matchup against the No.3 Washington Huskies on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 MDT and will be streamed on the PAC-12 Networks.
