Box Score OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University women's volleyball team defeated Cal Poly on Monday evening inside the Lockhart Arena in Orem, Utah.
Tori Dorius gave UVU (1-3) a career night with 18 kills and a hitting percentage of .412% as the Wolverines made big plays late against Cal Poly (0-3).
Dorius reached a new career-high in kills sparked by a hot start by the Wolverines as Dorius had seven kills in the opening set to lead UVU to a first-set victory over Cal Poly. UVU was aided by service aces from
Makayla Broadbent,
Abbie Miller,
Bryton Nixon,
Kazna Tanuvasa, and
Avery Shewell.

Sam Atoa said, "We always want to protect the homecourt, which was a battle today. We are always talking about being the first five. We did an excellent job in the first set and got a little complacent in the second and fourth, before the comeback."
The second set saw seven tie scores, but no lead changes as Cal Poly led the entire set. After trailing 12-8 to the Mustangs, UVU made a push midway through the set to comeback, scored 15-14 after a block assist by
Kalea Kennedy and Broadbent, and later tied the match at 16-16 after an attack error. Late in the set, a Shewell kill and a second attack error tied the set at 24. Cal Poly got kills from Tommi Stockham and Maia Dvoracek to win the set.
In the third set, Broadbent got the scoring going for UVU with an early kill, block assist and then added a service ace to give UVU a 4-3 lead early in the set. Cal Poly went on a run a few points later to take a 9-6 lead. Kennedy got the Wolverines on a short run that was aided by another block assist from Dorius and Broadbent and a Dorius kill to put UVU up 14-12. UVU pulled away after going up 22-18 after Shewell provided a late spark with two kills and went on to win the set.
A fast start in the fourth set gave UVU a 5-2 lead with two Dorius kills and a block assist from Broadbent after Cal Poly tied the set up at 10. The Wolverines trailed 17-13 midway through the set and went on the offensive with two points from
Jules Fink on a block, and a kill brought UVU back within two. Kennedy and Dorius came up big in the fourth set with two kills late to get the match tied at 23. UVU took advantage of a bad set from Cal Poly, before Shewell had one final kill to complete the match win for UVU.
Natalie Palmer had a career-high 22 assists, and 10 digs in support of the UVU victory.
Abbie Miller chipped in 20 assists and seven digs. Shewell added another career-high night with eight kills, and Tanuvasa added 12 kills.
The Wolverines will stay home for this weekend's Utah Valley Invitational against Cal on Sept. 1
st at 5:00 p.m. from the Pac-12 and Northern Arizona from the Big Sky. Tickets are available for both matches of the UVU Invitational.
