LOGAN, Utah – Utah Valley University fell to Utah State University (24-26, 25-15, 25-16, 18-25, 16-18) on Tuesday night at the Wayne Estes Center in Logan, Utah.
Tori Dorius had a career-high 22 kills and a .395 attack percentage to lead UVU (5-4) in the five-set thriller.
Kalea Kennedy off the bench chipped in with 13 kills. Utah State (7-2) won the match that featured 30 ties and 12 lead changes behind 15 kills from Tatum Stall, 14 kills from Shelby Capllonch, and 13 kills from Emilee Turner.
The Aggies took the opening set 26-24 after UVU jumped out to a 7-2 lead. Dorius led the charge with two kills, while
Abbie Miller held the serve for five straight points. USU slowly chipped away at the Wolverine lead and got back within one at 15-14. The Aggies took the home court edge and took their first lead at 22-21, and used a solid stretch to win the opening set.
The Wolverines outhit the Aggies .375% to .094 en route to a 25-15 second set victory. UVU capitalized on eight Aggie attack errors in the set. Dorius scattered four kills, while recording a .800 attack percentage in the second set. UVU used a 6-0 run as
Kazna Tanuvasa had three service aces in the second set to close out the set.
The two teams played to a tie at 12 in the third set before UVU pulled away from USU. Dorius started the run with a kill before two Aggies errors gave Utah Valley a three-point lead.
Makayla Broadbent had back-to-back kills, and
Avery Shewell added a service ace before two kills from
Kalea Kennedy to put UVU up 21-14. UVU used a 4-0 run to end the third set at 25-16 with kills from Kennedy and Fink with a service ace from
Ke'ilani Sedrick.
Utah State went on the offensive in the fourth set and outhit the Wolverines .448% to .306% as the Aggies won the fourth by a 25-18 margin. Trailing 15-11, UVU used a 5-1 run to tie the set at 16-16 after two attack errors and two kills from Kennedy and one from Tanuvasa. The Aggies responded with a 9-2 advantage to win the set.
Dorius took over the fifth set for UVU with five kills, including one to give UVU a potential match point at 16-15. Two earlier Dorius kills had tied the match at 14. Utah State scored the last three points to win the set 18-16. The Wolverines had two match points but could not get the final point to win the match.
The loss snaps a five-match winning streak for the Wolverines. UVU had 16 blocks in the game, with Broadbent and Fink having four each. Miller tied a game-high 29 assists with Beatrice Rodriguez from USU.
UVU returns home to play Weber State on Thursday, Sept. 15, for a 6:00 p.m. start before playing on the road on Saturday in Provo against No. 15 BYU. The WAC opener is on Sept. 22, as the Wolverines will head south to play at Utah Tech in the Old Hammer Rivalry.
