BROOKINGS, S.D. – Utah Valley University wrestling notched three ranked wins, including
Ty Smith's upset over #8 Clay Carlson at South Dakota State on Friday night in Big 12 Wrestling. The 16-ranked Jacks won the dual behind seven victories, 29-12.
Kase Mauger and No. 7
Demetrius Romero also earned wins for the Wolverines. Mauger pinned his opponent, No. 21 Tanner Jordan, in the second period (3:50) while Romero edged No. 13 Cade DeVos, 4-2.
The match at 141 ended the night with Smith's victory coming in a highly contested bout. The Wolverine led 2-1 heading into the second and extended his lead to 4-2 after a reversal. In the action-packed third period, Carlson rallied with an escape and a takedown to take a brief 5-4 lead, but Smith answered right back with three of his own points on an escape and takedown. Carlson scored a late escape before Smith held on for the tight victory.
"Our expectation with every dual is to have ten wrestlers go out and wrestle start to finish with purpose and intensity. We have, for the most part, been able to do that. Tonight, it especially paid off for Ty and Kase, who had big wins over ranked opponents. Demetrius also had a controlled win against a highly ranked opponent as he continues to build toward being 100%," said UVU head coach Greg Williams.
South Dakota State took the early momentum by winning the first three matches at 149, 157, and 165.
The Wolverines got on the board after Romero picked up a hard-fought win at 174. Romero trailed 1-0 heading into the third period and tied it on an escape before taking control of the match with a takedown. In the match's final moments, DeVos attempted a takedown as time expired, and the call was upheld on video review to give Romero a 4-2 victory after riding time.
Following three Jackrabbit victories, Mauger notched his third pin and nine victory of the season with the fall over Jordan. Mauger had a takedown in the opening period and led 2-1 entering the second before finishing the match 50 seconds into the period.
Utah Valley will head to Fargo and take on No. 14 North Dakota State on Sunday, Jan. 22. The dual will start at 1:00 p.m. MT and will air on gobison.com. UVU will then host Snow College and Big 12 foe Air Force on Friday, Jan. 27 in a tri-dual.
