Utah Valley heads to St. George to renew Old Hammer Rivalry with Utah Tech

Utah Valley returns to Utah this week to renew the Old Hammer Rivalry with Utah Tech at Greater Zion Stadium on Thursday in St. George.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+. Live stats will be available at the link above.

The Wolverines and Trailblazers will meet for just the third time on the soccer pitch, with Utah Valley holding a 2-0 series lead all-time. The Wolverines edged out Utah Tech last season at Clyde Field for a 1-0 victory. Alejandro Silva scored the lone goal of the match for Utah Valley in the first half.

LAST TIME OUT

The Wolverines went 0-1-1 in the first week of the WAC season, with a 5-2 loss at No. 23 Seattle U on Thursday and a 1-1 draw at San Jose State on Sunday. The Wolverines fell behind early, with a goal by Angel Iniguez in the 4th minute, but settled in defensively for the remainder of the game. Parker Allen picked up four saves in his first career start, and Ken Bellini scored his first goal of the season in the 33rd minute.

SILVA REACHES CAREER MILESTONE

During Thursday's game at Seattle U, junior midfielder Alejandro Silva reached 4,000 minutes played in a Wolverine uniform. Silva is just the 11th player to reach this career milestone.

ABOUT THE OLD HAMMER RIVALRY

With Utah Tech joining the WAC at the start of the 2020-21 athletic year, this brought the renewal of a dormant rivalry that dates back to the 1970s when UVU and Utah Tech were both junior colleges. Utah Tech and Utah Valley competed in Region 18 and the Scenic West Athletic Conference for over 30 years, from 1972-2003. Prior to the two schools' first meeting as WAC opponents in the 2020-21 basketball season, UVU and Utah Tech announced the renewed and rebranded "Old Hammer Rivalry," which is contested in 11 sports. Men's soccer is the newest addition to the rivalry slate, as Utah Valley added men's soccer in 2014, and the two teams have faced off just twice, with the Wolverines winning both games.

UP NEXT

Utah Valley returns home for four of its final five matches, starting with the defending WAC regular season champion Air Force Falcons on Thursday, Oct. 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. MDT and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
