OREM, Utah – Utah Valley women's volleyball defeated Seattle University 3-0 (25-13, 25-6, 25-18). UVU (5-12, 2-4) as the Wolverines hit a season-high .378 in the match, including .630 in the second set to beat Seattle U (5-12, 0-6). Senior
Abbie Medeiros recorded a double-double with 23 assists and ten digs and sophomore outside
Avery Shewell added her fourth double-double with ten kills and ten digs.
"We did well in all areas of the game. We really disrupted what Seattle U was trying to do. They were just trying to find answers, which was the challenge for us in previous matches, where we were slow in making adjustments and then converting," said UVU head coach
Sam Atoa.
The Wolverines used a .343 hitting percentage in the first set to win 25-13 behind six kills from Shewell, four from Ellis, and three from
Hailey Cuff. The defense held their own, with Ellis having three blocks, and was joined by
Caleigh Vagana, who added three of her own blocks to hold Seattle U to a -.056 hitting percentage in the first set. UVU broke the 13-13 tie with a 12-0 run to clinch the first set at 25-13.
UVU tallied 17 kills on 27 attacks for a .630 hitting percentage in the second set and started by extending their 12-0 run to 17-0.
Molly Cummard entered the match to serve as Utah Valley had jumped out to an 11-2 lead. She held the serve for the next eight, including a pair of service aces during the stretch. The lead for Utah Valley was pushed to 18-2 after two block assists by
Vittoria Price and Ellis. As the set winded down,
Madi Standifird entered the match with two kills for the 25-6 win.
The Wolverines never trailed in the third set after jumping out to a 4-0 lead after a service ace from Cuff. After Seattle U chipped a bit closer at 9-5, Cummard entered the match, and after kills from Cuff and
Kalea Kennedy, she added her third service ace of the match to extend the lead to 12-5. The UVU lead was extended out to 20-10 after a block assist by Price and
Charity Wilson, and they teamed up for their second stopping a Redhawk run and making it 21-13. Wilson earned her first kill before the match ended on the first career kill from
Maranda Schneberger.
The victory is the first sweep of the season for Utah Valley, who played all 15 eligible players in the win. Redshirt freshman
Eliza Hakes made her UVU debut, recording two digs.
Ellis finished with 11 kills on 18 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage and added seven blocks. Cuff added seven kills and seven digs, while Price finished with four kills and five blocks, and Kennedy tallied four kills.
Utah Valley will travel for the next four matches, with the first coming up later this week against Utah Tech on Oct. 12 at 5:00 p.m. MT in the Old Hammer Rivalry. The Wolverines close the week with a match at Southern Utah on Oct. 14 at 1:00 p.m. MT in Cedar City.
