ARLINGTON, Texas – Utah Valley women's volleyball fell to UT Arlington 3-1 (16-25, 25-18, 22-25, 24-26) on Thursday evening inside the College Park Center. Utah Valley (9-15, 6-7) was led by sophomore outside hitter
Avery Shewell, who had 15 kills, 11 digs, and five blocks in the loss, while UTA (18-8, 7-6) was led by middle blocker Paige Reagor who had 16 kills in the match.
The Mavericks took the lead after a 4-0 run put them up 7-4 in the opening set, and they led 14-9 after a kill from Reagor before UVU mounted a comeback that started with a UTA service error before two block assists from Shewell and
Caleigh Vagana, and a kill from reigning WAC Player of the Week,
Tori Ellis, forced a timeout. The Wolverines could not take advantage of the run, as they dropped a 6-1 run to trail 20-14 before UT Arlington closed out the first set.
Utah Valley broke a 5-5 tie in the second with a 6-1 run of their own to take an 11-6 lead. The run started with a kill from
Kalea Kennedy before three UTA errors and a solo block from
Charity Wilson made it 10-6. After a Maverick timeout, Vagana and Ellis came up with a block assist to make it 11-6. UVU pulled away with three blocks as Vagana, Shewell, Ellis, and
Vittoria Price came up with blocks. The Wolverines won the second set 25-18 after six kills from Ellis and five total blocks.
The momentum favored the Wolverines in the third set as they took an 11-6 lead after taking advantage of one of UTA's 12 service errors before getting a pair of blocks from Price, Shewell, and Kennedy, making it 9-5 before kills from Shewell, and Wilson capped the run. The Mavericks came back with an 8-2 run that clinched the set to go up 2-1.
The Wolverines started a comeback trailing 17-13 in the final set, starting with kills from Vagana and Shewell mixed in with a pair of UTA attack errors to make it 17-16. Ellis came up with a big kill to get the deficit back to one before a pair of UVU errors pushed the Mavericks lead to 20-17. Once again, Utah Valley answered after a ball handling error, and a kill from
Hailey Cuff put the set at 20-19. The set ended with a 6-4 run to clinch the victory for the Mavericks.
Senior
Abbie Medeiros had 21 assists in the match and is now at 1,984 for her career and needs 16 to reach 2,000 for her career. She is currently fifth all-time in assists. Ellis has 906 career kills and reached 900 in the match tonight. She needs 25 kills to pass Lexi Thompson for eighth all-time.
The Wolverines will travel to Stephen F. Austin for a match on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 11:00 a.m. MT from Shelton Gymnasium. UVU returns to Lockhart Arena next week for matches against Southern Utah and Utah Tech.
