Utah Valley opens WAC play at home against Seattle U

UTAH VALLEY HOSTS SEATTLE U ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT IN WAC OPENER
  • Utah Valley will open Western Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night at the UCCU Center against league rival Seattle U. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
  • Utah Valley will celebrate Native American Heritage Night at Wednesday night's game against Seattle U. The UVU Native American Initiative will be performing before the game and at halftime.
  • Caleb Stone-Carrawell led three other Wolverines in double figures with a game-high 15 points to lead Utah Valley to an 87-52 win over Western Colorado on Friday night at the UCCU Center. K'mani Doughty reached double figures with 12 points , while Tanner Toolson and Drake Allen each scored 11. Trevin Dorius nearly had a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds with two blocks.
  • Utah Valley has won nine straight games at home and 19 of its last 20 at the UCCU Center. UVU's last loss at home was an 85-80 setback to Seattle U on Jan. 14, 2023. The nine straight home wins is the 10th-longest home win streak in the nation.
  • Utah Valley will hang its 2022-23 WAC regular season championship banner in the rafters before tip-off on Wednesday. The Wolverines will also hang their National Invitation Tournament (NIT) semifinal banner prior to the Seattle U game.
  • Utah Valley went 1-1 at the Jacksonville Classic in St. Augustine, Florida last week. The Wolverines defeated Southern Miss, 67-64, before falling to Cornell in the championship game, 74-61. UVU also dropped a 62-45 decision at Charlotte to open the eight-day road trip to North Carolina and Florida.
  • Utah Valley University guard Drake Allen has been named to the Preseason All-WAC team as voted on by the league's head coaches.  Allen, a transfer from Southern Utah, heads into his junior season after a stellar sophomore campaign for the Thunderbirds during the 2022-23 season. He played all 37 games while averaging 11.0 points, 3.6 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.4 steals a game last year. He shot nearly 50 percent from the field (151-of-303) and knocked down 27 threes during the season. Allen was named to the WAC All-Newcomer team for his efforts during the 2022-23 season.
  • Utah Valley welcomes 11 new players to the squad, including seven transfers in K'mani Doughty (New Orleans), Drake Allen (Southern Utah), Tanner Toolson (BYU), Simon Akena (McCook CC), Nate Tshimanga (Troy), Caleb Stone-Carrawell (Austin Peay), and Trevin Dorius (Utah State). UVU also welcomes true freshmen Jackson Holcombe, Osiris Grady (4-star), Peter Amakasu, and McCaden Adams.
  • Utah Valley was picked to finish fourth by the coaches and eighth by the media in the WAC preseason polls.
  • Todd Phillips enters his first season as the head coach of the Utah Valley basketball team.  Phillips is no stranger to UVU as he spent the past four seasons as an associate head coach/assistant coach under previous head coach Mark Madsen. Phillips helped UVU to two WAC regular season titles (2020-21, 2022-23) and an impressive 70-51 record, including 48 wins over the last two seasons.


BROADCAST INFORMATION

Wednesday night's game against Seattle U will be broadcast live on ESPN+, which is available on the ESPN app or on ESPNplus.com. Brandon Crow and Josh Kallunki will be calling the action on the streaming service.  The game will also be broadcast over the air waves in Utah County with Jim McCulloch and Brice Larson on the call. The radio broadcast will be aired live on ESPN 960 AM radio with a live stream available at ESPN960sports.com. Larson will host the pregame/halftime/postgame show  for the game on ESPN 960 AM. 

ABOUT SEATTLE U
Seattle U enters Wednesday's game with a 4-2 record. The Redhawks have won two straight, including a 79-67 win over UC San Diego at home on Sunday. SU is 0-1 on the road this season, dropping a 60-56 decision at VCU on Nov. 18. Redshirt senior Cameron Tyson scored a game-high 28 points with six three-point field goals in Sunday's win over UC San Diego. Tyson leads the team in scoring this season at 15.7 points per game. Junior forward Kobe Williamson (13.2), senior guard Alex Schumacher (12.3), and redshirt junior forward Brandton Chatfield (10.8) also average double figures. Williamson leads the team on the boards, pulling down 6.7 rebounds per game. As a team, Seattle U averaged 71.50 points a game while holding opponents to a 62.0 points per game average. The Redhawks rank sixth nationally in field goal percentage at 56.8 percent. The team also ranks eighth in effective field goal percentage at .662. 

SERIES HISTORY VS. THE REDHAWKS
Utah Valley and Seattle U will meet for the 27th time on the basketball hardwood. The series is tied at 13-13. The two teams have split the two-game WAC series three of the last four seasons. UVU and SU split last season's two-game series with each team winning on the road. Seattle U handed the Wolverines their only loss at home last season on Jan. 14, taking an 85-80 win in Orem. UVU won the last matchup between the two schools, taking a 67-58 win in Seattle on Feb. 18, 2023.

10TH-LONGEST HOME WIN STREAK IN THE NATION
Utah Valley has won nine straight games at home dating back to the 2022-23 season. The Wolverines have also won 16 of their last 17 games at home. UVU's last loss at home was an 85-80 setback to Seattle U on Jan. 14, 2023. The home streak is the 10th-longest home win streak in the nation.

UTAH VALLEY FINISHES SECOND AT JACKSONVILLE CLASSIC
Utah Valley went 1-1 at the Jacksonville Classic at Flagler Gymnasium in St. Augustine, Florida. The Wolverines dropped a 74-61 decision to Cornell in the Bay Bracket championship game. UVU advanced to the championship after picking up a 67-65 win over Southern Miss. The Wolverines were one of the eight teams that participated in the Jacksonville Classic, Nov. 19 and 20. The Wolverines competed in the Bay Bracket along with Southern Miss, Cornell, and Cal State Fullerton. The Coast Bracket featured Charlotte, UCF, South Dakota State, and George Mason.
