Wolverines drop heartbreaker to UNLV in WAC quarterfinals

LAS VEGAS — The Utah Valley men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker in the WAC Tournament quarterfinals, falling in overtime to the UNLV Rebels, 3-2.

Tom Dobek-Pietrowski bagged a brace, including a goal in the 73rd minute that gave the Wolverines a 2-1 lead, but a hat trick by UNLV's Nico Lopez saw the Rebels through to the semifinals.

Utah Valley dominated the opening 15 minutes, including a header by Dobek-Pietrowski that went just wide. The tides shifted when the Rebels got on the board in the 19th minute off of a goal by Nico Lopez.

Following the opener, UNLV maintained their momentum for much of the next quarter of an hour, including a couple of close calls that nearly doubled the lead. The Wolverines had a few good chances to close out the half, including a header by Alex Fritcher that hit the woodwork.

Dobek-Pietrowski equalized in the 62nd minute after a long throw-in by Omar Yehya. The ball rattled around in the penalty area before Dobek-Pietrowski was able to head it into the top-right corner of the net.

10 minutes later, Dobek-Pietrowski gave the Wolverines a short-lived lead off of a similar play. The ball was cleared to the top of the penalty area, but a through ball back into the 18 by Owen Knecht found the foot of Dobek-Pietrowski, who powered it into the back of the net.

Lopez got his second goal of his hat trick in the 75th minute.

After an uneventful first half of extra time, the Rebels took the lead for good in the 107th minute of extra time off of a header by Lopez. The Wolverines had a few good chances in the final minute, including a shot by Alejandro Silva that went just over the crossbar, but none were able to find the back of the net.

UNLV moves on to face the top-seeded Seattle U Redhawks in Wednesday's semifinals.
