DAVIS, Calif. — The Utah Valley softball team fell 5-4 in extra innings to the UC Davis Aggies on Sunday at LaRue Field in Davis, Calif. to close out the NorCal Kickoff Tournament.
The Wolverines (2-3) got on the board quickly in the top of the first with a pair of runs. Libbie Hawker reached on a fielding error by the pitcher and Rylee Thorpe singled down the left field line. Both runners advanced on a passed ball by the catcher.
Kalena Shepherd grounded out to first to bring home Hawker, and an errant throw by the first baseman allowed Thorpe to come around and score.
Hawker got the rally started again in the third, this time with a looping line drive down the left field line. Britney Moreno reached on a sacrifice bunt after a throwing error by the third baseman, which allowed Hawker to move to third. Thorpe grounded out to third, which held Hawker but allowed Moreno to move to second. Shepherd then smacked a single through the right side that brought both runners in.
The Aggies battled back to tie it in the fifth with a two-out rally. UC Davis recorded five straight hits, including four straight extra base hits. Katie Zuniga came on and got a punchout to get the Wolverines out of the jam.
Both teams traded zeroes until extra innings. The Wolverines were unable to bring in their extra inning ghost runner. The Aggies brought their runner in after Angelique Mann made a diving catch in deep right center, but Utah Valley was unable to get the throw home in time.
Utah Valley heads to Southern California next weekend for the Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State. The Wolverines will open play against the No. 23 Oregon Ducks on Friday at 10 a.m. MT.
