Wolverines fall at California Baptist

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Utah Valley University surrendered a big California Baptist run in the opening quarter en route to a 90-52 defeat on Thursday night in the CBU Events Center.

The Lancers used an 18-0 run in the first quarter to take early control of the contest before pulling away in the second half. Shay Fano led Utah Valley with 16 points while Kaylee Byon finished with nine and Kylee Mabry added eight points for the Wolverines (6-19, 3-11).

Trinity San Antonio led all scorers with 20 points for the Lancers (14-11, 10-4) with Filipa Barros and Chloe Webb both finishing with 13. All of Barros' scoring came in the second half for CBU.

Fano got the game started with a 3-pointer on the game's first possession, but the Wolverines went cold from there. From there, UVU couldn't get a bucket to drop while CBU heated up. The Wolverines missed eight straight attempts from the field while the Lancers had a stretch of 6-for-9 shooting, including four makes from three, during the run of 18 straight points.

In the final minute of the first, Fano had a bucket and free throw and Mabry scored on a reverse layup to get it back to an 11-point game, 20-9, after one quarter.

Abby Conlee scored for Utah Valley to make it a 26-13 game before California Baptist ran off a quick 7-0 run to extend the lead to 20. The Lancers led 42-19 at the half behind 12 points from San Antonio and seven made 3-pointers. Fano led the Wolverines with eight points and seven rebounds at the break.

CBU got a combined 17 points from San Antonio and Filipa Barros in the third quarter. The two made six of their seven combined attempts in the quarter as the Lancers stretched it to 67-34 after three quarters. California Baptist shot 50% from the field (31-for-62) while Utah Valley was 18-for-56 (32.1%) overall.

Next week, Utah Valley will embark on its final road trip of the season with games at Grand Canyon (Feb. 20) and Seattle U (Feb. 22).
