Utah Valley picks up 67-58 road win at Seattle U

SEATTLELe'Tre Darthard led three other Wolverines in double figures with a team-high 19 points and Aziz Bandaogo matched a career high with 17 rebounds to lead Utah Valley to a 67-58 road win over Seattle U on Saturday night at a packed and rowdy Redhawk Center.

Utah Valley improves to 21-6 overall and the team keeps a two-game cushion over Southern Utah and Sam Houston atop the WAC standings with a 12-2 record. UVU gives Seattle U its first loss of the season at the Redhawk Center as the team entered the game against the Wolverines with an 8-0 mark at the 999-seat gym.

The Wolverines have now won five straight games for a second time this season. UVU has not lost a game since dropping a game on the road at Southern Utah on Jan. 26. Utah Valley is 18-2 over the last two and a half months.

"It was a heck of a battle by our guys," said Utah Valley Associate Head Coach Todd Phillips. "It was the number one defense against the number two defense in the league and it played out that way as nobody could score. Our guys just made some big plays down the stretch to secure the victory."

Both teams struggled from the field in the first half with UVU shooting just 22.9 percent (8-of-35) from the floor and just 7.1 percent (1-of-14) from three. The first half featured three ties and four lead changes. Neither team led by more than five points in the first period. Tied 19-19, Seattle U used a 5-2 run over the final three minutes of the first half to take a 24-21 lead into the break.

The second half featured five ties and six lead changes. The two teams played to a 48-48 tie with seven minutes remaining. Tim Fuller then scored to give the Wolverines a lead they would not relinquish again, outscoring the Redhawks 19-10 over the final seven minutes to secure the 67-58 win.

UVU scored 21 points in the first half and then dropped 46 points in the second half.
Darthard scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half. He connected on 5-of-11 shots from the field, including a pair of threes. He also made 7-of-8 shots at the free throw line. He also pulled down four rebounds with four assists, three steals, and one block.
Trey Woodbury scored 11 points with eight rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Justin Harmon and Fuller scored 10 points apiece, while Bandaogo was just two points shy of a double-double with eight points and 17 rebounds. Bandaogo also had two blocks.

Utah Valley, which leads the nation in blocks, had seven swats on the night, including two each from Fuller, Bandaogo, and Tim Ceaser. Darthard also had a block. The Wolverines outrebounded SU 43-38 and outscored the Redhawks 38-20 in the paint. UVU forced the Seattle into 13 turnovers which resulted in 24 UVU points.

Utah Valley will continue road play as the team travels to The Lone Star State next week to play Tarleton on Thursday, Feb. 23 and Abilene Christian on Saturday, Feb. 25. UVU will then return home to wrap up regular season play against UT Arlington and Stephen F. Austin at the UCCU Center.
