With his win at the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invitational on Feb. 12, senior golfer
Brady McKinlay won his fourth straight individual title to become Utah Valley's all-time career wins leader.
McKinlay surpasses Mason Casper who had three wins over three seasons from 2010-2013, winning one event in each of his three years with the Wolverines. McKinlay has won all four of his individual titles this season in back-to-back-to-back-to-back tournaments. He has won four of the five events he has played this season, including three in the fall before taking a four-month winter break.
After the winter break and in his first event of the spring season, McKinlay fired a final-round 7-under-par 65 to move up five spots on the leaderboard and claim the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invitational at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George with a three-round score of 9-under-par 207 (68-74-65). He also led the Wolverines to the team title at the event.
"Breaking the record is very cool, obviously a goal but something that seemed almost out of reach when I arrived here at UVU," said McKinlay. "I haven't thought about the records much, but I'd love to break every single one of them. This year has been going great and we are getting into the heart of the season, so I'm really looking forward to keeping it going."
The Alberta, Canada native opened the season at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational at the United States Air Force Academy where he recorded a top-20 finish, tying for 19th with a three-round 1-under-par 215 (70-71-74). He then won his first-ever collegiate tournament at the Ram Masters Invitational at Fort Collins Country Club with a three-round score of 9-under-par 201 (71-66-64). The following week he won again, taking the title at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational at Boulder Country Club with a three-round 7-under-par 203 (69-68-66). McKinlay then wrapped up the fall season with individual medalist honors at the Shocker Invitational for his third straight title with a score of 11-under-par 202 (66-67-69). He then opened the spring season with the win at the Pat Hicks Invitational.
"Winning is incredibly hard," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Curran. "To do what he's done is truly amazing. He's developed his game to a point where I believe he could win every time he tees it up. Breaking the record puts him in a class all by himself. I have a feeling these records will be around for a long time."
In terms of wins and losses, McKinlay's numbers are extraordinary as he accumulated a 385-18-4 mark against his competition in the five events he has played. As of Feb. 22, he holds a national rating of six according to GolfStat.com and is ranked No. 42 on the GolfStat.com individual rankings list. He is also ranked No. 68 in the Golfweek college individual national rankings presented by StrackaLine.
McKinlay also ranks 11th among the international collegiate golfers in the Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings. The top six golfers from the spring's final ranking from both the United States and International men shall be among the individuals selected to compete in the Palmer Cup, which will be hosted by Laurel Valley Golf Club June 8-10.
McKinlay holds a 68.53 scoring average this season which would be the lowest scoring average in UVU history, surpassing Nic Van Vuuren's 71.97 scoring mark set during the 2005-06 season. McKinlay has six events remaining this season culminating with the WAC Championship, April 28-30, in Boulder City, Nevada.
Next up for McKinlay will be the Loyola Invitational, Feb. 26-28, at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona.
