OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley University hits the road for the final time during the WAC regular season with games at Grand Canyon at Seattle University this week. The Wolverines will play at GCU on Thursday at 6 p.m. MT in Phoenix before closing out the week Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. MT at Seattle. Both games will air live on ESPN+.
UVU (6-19, 3-11) enters the week in a tie for 12th with UT Rio Grande Valley and one game back in the loss column of Seattle U. The top 12 (out of 13) teams qualify for the WAC Tournament in March in Las Vegas. The seeding for the tournament will be based on the WAC's new resume seeding scenario. Utah Valley is also currently 12th in the resume seeding, with Seattle U in 13th.
Utah Valley is three games up in the loss column and owns the tiebreaker over Tarleton. One more Wolverine win or Tarleton loss assures UVU of a berth in the WAC Tournament.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
Grand Canyon is 18-7 overall and 10-4 in WAC play and tied in the loss column with California Baptist in third place. The Lopes are third in the current resume seeding. GCU leads the all-time series against UVU, 14-8, but the teams have split the last four games in the series. The Wolverines won a double-overtime thriller on Dec. 29 to open WAC play, 65-63, behind 20 points and 20 rebounds from Jaeden Brown, who is currently injured for UVU.
Seattle U is 4-20 overall and 4-10 in the WAC and will host Utah Tech on Thursday night. The Redhawks defeated the Wolverines earlier this season in Orem, 66-58, to snap a four-game Utah Valley winning streak. The Wolverines built a big lead in the first quarter but the Redhawks came back behind a big third-quarter run.
UP NEXT
Next week, the Wolverines will wrap up the regular season with home games against UT Rio Grande Valley (Feb. 28) and Utah Tech (March 1). The game against UTU will also be Senior Night for the team's lone senior, Kayla Anderson.
