CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. — Brooke Saili pitched her second complete game in as many days and Taylor Wooten drove in three runs to lead the Utah Valley softball team to a 4-1 victory over the San Diego Toreros on Sunday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Saili surrendered just one unearned run on two hits to silence the Torero bats, racking up four strikeouts in the process. Wooten went 2-for-3 with a double. The freshman from San Clemente, Calif. had seven RBIs over her last two games.
Angelique Mann provided a spark from the nine spot in the order, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Victoria Vasquez came off the bench and went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles.
The Wolverines struck first in the third. Britney Moreno reached on a bunt, then Angelique singled through the left side. Libbie Hawker slapped a single down the left field line to bring in Moreno. Wooten then doubled to right to extend the lead to three.
San Diego got on the board in the fifth. After a lead-off single and an error, the Toreros laid down two bunts to bring their lone run across.
Utah Valley extended the lead back up to three in the bottom half of the inning. Mann singled to start the inning, then advanced to second on a Hawker groundout. Wooten drove her home with a line drive single to center.
Saili was at her best in the final two innings, holding the Toreros without a baserunner over the final six outs..
The Wolverines will play their first games in Utah this weekend at the Trailblazer Tournament in St. George. Utah Valley opens the tournament on Friday against Oregon State and Portland State.
