OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University continues a stretch of four games in eight days with two home contests this week beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. MT against UT Arlington in the UCCU Center. The Wolverines (5-17, 2-9) will also host Southern Utah on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT. Saturday's game will be Nickname Night for the Wolverines, with the team sporting their new uniforms adorned with Devil Bears on the front. Devil bear is a nickname for the wolverine.
UVU split two games last week on a trip to Texas. The Wolverines won an overtime thriller at Tarleton, 63-59, last Saturday behind 21 points from Kaylee Byon. The freshman set a new career-high in scoring after totaling 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime and she also hit the game-tying shot to force the extra frame with less than one second left in regulation. Byon is averaging 15.3 points per game over the last seven contests and has reached double figures in six of those games.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
UT Arlington (10-13, 4-7) handed Southern Utah its first loss in WAC play on Monday. Starr Jacobs put back her own miss as time expired for the 60-58 win. Jacobs is averaging 16.5 points and 7.3 rebounds to lead the Lady Mavs. Thursday is the first time that UVU at UTA will meet.
Southern Utah is 13-8 overall and 9-1 in WAC play after Monday's loss at UTA. The T-Birds held off the Wolverines in Cedar City on Jan. 11, 70-66, and lead the all-time series 16-9. Cherita Daugherty leads SUU with 14.8 points per game while former Wolverine Megan Jensen is averaging 11.4 points. Lizzy Williamson leads the WAC with an average of 10.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game, which ranks 17th in the country.
