Trey Woodbury scored a season-high 29 points and became the ninth player in Utah Valley history to reach the 1,000-point mark to lead Utah Valley in an 89-88 setback to in-state foe Southern Utah in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
Le'Tre Darthard had hit a pair of free throws to give UVU a three-point 88-85 lead with 10 seconds to play. SUU's Tevian Jones pulled up and knocked down a three while being fouled to tie the game, 88-88. Jones then made the free throw to give the T-Birds the 89-88 win.
Justin Harmon's layup at the buzzer just rolled off the rim that would have given UVU the win.
Utah Valley had built a 23-point lead with 15:42 remaining in the game, but Southern Utah clawed its way back to take its first lead on the game-winning free throw since leading 27-25 with 4:27 to play in the first half.
Woodbury scored his season-high 29 points on a 10 of 15 clip from the field, including a career-best seven three-pointers. He also pulled down eight rebounds with six assists.
Woodbury became the ninth Wolverine in UVU history to score 1,000 points with a pullback jumper in the first half at the 3:07 mark. He now has 1,017 career points in his four seasons at UVU.
Tim Fuller matched a season high with 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Justin Harmon scored 13 points with six rebounds and five assists. Darthard and
Aziz Bandaogo were also in double figures with 12 points apiece.
Utah Valley shot an impressive 55.4 percent (31-56) from the field with a 42.9 percent (9-21) mark from long range. SUU shot 44.8 percent (30-67) from the floor with a 38. 1 percent (8-21) clip from three.
