Utah Valley drops 88-86 overtime decision to UAB in NIT semifinal

LAS VEGASTrey Woodbury and Aziz Bandaogo each recorded a double-double to lead Utah Valley in an 88-86 overtime setback to UAB on Tuesday night in the semifinals of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. 
 
Utah Valley wraps up its season with a 28-9 overall record—the most wins ever recorded in a single season in UVU history. The Wolverines enjoyed their most successful season in program history with 28 wins, a WAC regular season title, and a run to the NIT semifinals in Las Vegas. 

"I'm incredibly proud of our entire locker room of players," said Utah Valley head coach Mark Madsen. "I'm incredibly proud of every man in the locker room, every manager that's part of our organization. This team has great players, players that work. And they just completed the best basketball season in UVU school history, so I wanted to celebrate the players and the job they have done. We fell a little bit short tonight but just the fight, the energy and the enthusiasm out there was incredible."

Trailing 74-70 with two minutes to play in regulation, Woodbury scored four unanswered points, including a game-tying bucket in the paint with 34 seconds remaining to tie the game 74-74. The UVU defense then held UAB to three straight missed field goals over the final 24 seconds to send the game into overtime. UVU tied the game 83-83 with one minute to play in overtime but were then outscored 5-2 in the final minute as UAB secured the 88-86 win. 
 
Woodbury recorded a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double. He knocked down 5 of 13 shots from the field and connected on 6 of 7 free throws on the night. He also dished out six assists with a pair of steals. Bandaogo notched his 17th double-double of the season with 14 points and 16 rebounds. He connected on 5 of 9 shots from the floor, including a make from long range. He also had two steals and a block.
 
Justin Harmon chipped in 16 points with four rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block.Tim Fuller also neared a double-double with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Le'Tre Darthard was also in double figures with 12 points. Ethan Potter came off the bench to score seven points in 17 minutes of play. 
 
Utah Valley shot 41.9 percent (31-74) on the night with a 25.0 percent (5-20) mark from three-point range. UVU held UAB to a 40.5 percent (32-79) clip from the field with a 43.8 percent (7-16) clip from long range. 
 
The Wolverines outrebounded UAB 50-48 and outscored the Blazers 46-40 in the paint. 
 
Ty Brewer led UAB with a game-high 30 points. Jordan Walker was also in double figures with 17 points. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
UAB jumped out to an 11-2 lead through the first four minutes of the game and then held on to the lead throughout the first half, going up by as many as 10 points on four different occasions. The Blazers took a 28-18 lead with 7:41 to play in the first half before Ethan Potter knocked down a three to spark a 9-1 UVU run over the next three minutes to cut the UAB lead to just two points, 29-27, with 4:44 to go. UAB held on to a 32-30 lead with 4:09 on the clock and then used a 7-2 run to extend the lead to six points, 39-32, with 1:40 left in the half. The Wolverines outscored UAB 5-2 the rest of the way to cut the Blazer lead to just four points, 41-37, at the half.
 
The Blazers scored the first four points of the second half to extend their lead to eight points, 45-37, with 18:15 on the clock. Justin Harmon then hit a jumper and Aziz Bandaogo knocked down a three to cut it to just three points, 45-42, with 17 minutes to go. UAB extended its lead to eight points, 57-49, with 13:22 to play. Utah Valley responded with a 13-4 run over the next five minutes culminating in a Tim Fuller bucket that gave the Wolverines their first lead of the game, 62-61, with eight minutes remaining. UAB then scored seven of the next nine points to take a 68-64 lead with 5:31 to play.
