ST. GEORGE, Utah — Utah Valley dropped its final game at the Trailblazer Tournament to the Idaho State Bengals by a score of 8-6. After jumping out to a 6-1 lead through two innings, the Bengals scored seven unanswered runs to secure the win.
Jaeden Barajas hit a two-run home run in the first to get the Wolverines on the board. Idaho State cut the deficit in half in the top of the second with a two-out rally that scored one.
Utah Valley hung a four-spot in the bottom of the second to take a 6-1 lead. Rylee Thorpe led off the inning with a single and was immediately doubled home by Angelique Mann. Danyé Albritton reached on a bunt and Britney Moreno walked to load the bases.
Taylor Wooten delivered the big blow in the inning with a two-RBI single to right. Kalena Shepherd reached on an error by the shortstop two batters later to bring in the fourth run of the inning.
The Bengals answered back with a five-run fourth to take the lead. The big hit of the inning was a three-run home run by ISU's Ava Brown. The Bengals stretched the lead to two in the sixth and would hold onto that for the remainder of the game.
Two Wolverines reached in the seventh to lead off the inning, but a popped-up bunt resulted in a double play to snuff out the rally.
Utah Valley will enjoy a week off before opening its home season against in-state rival Utah State on March 14. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT.
