Kemboi and Cheney both set UVU records in the 5k

AZUSA & LONG BEACH, Calif. — Habtamu Cheney and Everlyn Kemboi both set new Utah Valley school records in the 5,000 at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University late Friday night. Mazzie Melaney Preston also notched what is now the second-best 5k time in program history.

Kemboi's performance in the women's 5k is the top time in the NCAA this season. The All-American won the event with a time of 15:20.67, which shatters her previous UVU record of 16:04.18. It's also the 22nd-best time in the NCAA record book and comes just two weeks after her school record in the 10k at Stanford, which was also the 10th-best finish in NCAA history at the time. Melaney Preston also set a new personal record (15:51.47) while recording the second-best time in UVU history. The duo registered the first two sub-16-minute 5k times ever at Utah Valley.

Cheney ran the men's 5k 13:58.75, recording the first sub-14-minute 5,000-meter outdoor finish at Utah Valley. The previous record was held by Jason Lynch (14:04.10) and set in 2017. Like Kemboi, he also set a new school 10k mark at Stanford just two weeks ago.

UVU had a limited number of student-athletes competing on Friday at Azusa Pacific and at the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State. The Wolverines will wrap up the weekend on Saturday at both meets.
