Wolverines fall to BYU, 6-5

OREM, Utah — Jaeden Barajas went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs and Rylee Thorpe went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, but the BYU Cougars were able to come from behind and steal a 6-5 victory over the Utah Valley Wolverines on Wednesday night at Wolverine Softball Field.

The Cougars plated three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead, then held on for a 6-5 win after Barajas' solo shot to center cut the lead in half. Katie Zuniga (7-12) avoided the crooked number for most of the night, allowing a single run in the third, fourth, and fifth, but BYU was able to tag her for three in the seventh. Zuniga struck out four in the complete game loss.

Utah Valley jumped on top in the second inning when Angelique Mann scored on a wild pitch. BYu answered right back with a run of their own to tie it in the third.

The Wolverines plated two in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Barajas singled down the left field line to lead things off, then was immediately doubled home by Thorpe. The Cougars retired the next two batters, but Mya Higareda was able to punch a single through the right side to bring in Thorpe, who just beat the throw at the plate. BYU halved the deficit in the top of the fourth with a two-out single. Barajas brought in Britney Moreno to extend the lead back out to two. A pair of Cougar doubles in the fifth made it a 4-3 ballgame, and it would stay that way until the seventh.

The Cougars rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead for good. Barajas homered in the bottom of the inning to cut into the lead, and Utah Valley put the tying run in scoring position, but Mann popped out to end the game.

The Wolverines will stay home for their final home WAC series of the season this weekend against Southern Utah. Friday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 5 p.m. MDT, and Saturday's series finale is scheduled for 12 p.m. MDT. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+, and live stats will be available at UVUStats.com.
