ARLINGTON, Texas — Utah Valley University's
Everlyn Kemboi was named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year, the league announced on Tuesday following a vote by the league's head coaches. Stephen F. Austin's Branson Ellis was named the Men's T&F Athlete of the Year.
Kemboi swept the 5,000 and 10,000-meter races at the WAC Outdoor Championships for the second consecutive year, breaking her own meet record in the 5k, earlier in May in Nacogdoches, Texas.
She enters this week's NCAA Preliminary Rounds at No. 1 in the country in the 5k, is third nationally in the 10k, and ranks 22nd in the country and ninth in the West in the 1,500. Kemboi is a returning second-team All-American in the 10k and will compete in all three events at the regionals in Sacramento.
She now has nine WAC Championships during her two-year career at UVU. Four each in both indoor and outdoor track and one in cross country, where she was also an All-American after leading the Wolverine women to their first team appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championships last fall.
