Faith Webber recorded a brace, including the game winner to help lift the Utah Valley women's soccer team to a 5-1 win over Houston Christian on Sunday in the OUTRIGGER Soccer Kickoff at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on the island of O'ahu.
Utah Valley wraps up its season-opening road trip to the Aloha State with a 1-0-1 record with the win over HCU and the tie against host Hawaii. UVU now flies back across the ocean for its home opener against No. 25 Clemson on Thursday night at Clyde Field.
"We're happy with the win," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "Winning at this level is not easy and we're going to celebrate every one of them. I'm really proud of Faith coming off the weekend with three goals in two games. I was so happy for Nikki (Olanda) for being able to play in her hometown in front of her family and friends and coming away with a couple of assists today. We'll head back home tonight and get back on campus in the morning and start prepping for a Thursday night's match against a very good Clemson team."
Utah Valley got on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute after
Nicole Olanda stole the ball from the Houston Christian offense and sent a ball in the middle of the field to
Hannah Lee at the top of the box. Lee one-touched it to
Heather Stainbrook who sent it to Webber. Webber quickly passed the ball to Lee in the middle of the box. Lee then fired a shot into the back of the net to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
Jenna Shepherd Gremillion took the ball at the top of the box and sent it to
Ruby Hladek inside the box on the right side. Hladek then passed it right to Webber who curved a shot towards the far post and out of the reach of the HCU keeper to give the Wolverines a 2-0 advantage in the 50th minute..
Houston Christian was called for a foul in the box in the 55th minute and Webber fired in the penalty kick to give Utah Valley a 3-0 lead.
HCU's Alexa Huerta scored from the top of the box on the right side to cut the UVU lead to a 3-1 advantage in the 58th minute.
Olanda sent a corner kick into the box in the 80th minute and
Quincy Bonds got it across the line for the score to give the Wolverines a 4-1 lead. Olanda then sent another corner kick into the box in the 88th minute to
Sydney Bushman who headed it into the net to extend UVU's lead to a 5-1 advantage.
Utah Valley outshot Houston Christian 13-8 on the day with a 9-6 advantage on frame. Webber led UVU with a match-high five shots, including four on goal. Lee had three shots, while Bushman had two.
Leah Wolf picked up the win in the box, playing nearly 69 minutes with four saves.
CJ Graham played the final 20 minutes without allowing a goal while picking up one save.
Utah Valley now returns to Orem for its home opener at Clyde Field on Thursday, Aug. 24 against No. 25 Clemson. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
