OGDEN, Utah – Utah Valley women's volleyball team fell on Tuesday night on the road to Weber State, 3-0 (22-25, 19-25, 10-25). The Wildcats (7-3) hit .387 for the match to knock off Utah Valley (3-6).
Avery Shewell led the Wolverines with 11 kills in the match, while a pair of UVU freshmen reached double digits, with
Evalyn Chism having 13 assists and
Lani Matavao adding 12 digs.
The Wolverines trailed 12-7 in the opening set before an 8-1 run pushed them in front 15-13.
Hailey Cuff had one of her nine kills in the match during the stretch and later added the lone service ace for UVU. The Wildcats, though went on a final run of their own and regained the lead with a 6-0 run and found themselves at set point. They won the first set 25-22.
The Weber State momentum carried over into the second set as the Wildcats opened on a 5-1 run to take an early lead at 7-3. Utah Valley looked to take control in the middle part of the set after kills from. Shewell and
Tori Ellis got UVU back within four, and WSU held off the Wolverines to take a 2-0 lead.
Weber State used a 13-3 run in the third set to pull away in the third set and clinch the victory over the Wolverines.
Utah Valley will return home for matches against in-state rivals (RV) Utah State on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 6:00 p.m. MT before hosting No. 12 BYU on Friday, Sept. 15 at 6:00 p.m. MT.
