OREM—Utah Valley fell behind early and couldn't recover in a 6-1 loss to crosstown rival No. 7 BYU on Saturday night in front of a record crowd of 4,742 fans at Clyde Field.
Utah Valley falls to 2-3-1 overall with the loss while nationally ranked BYU improves to a perfect 6-0-0 with the win.
The 4,742 fans breaks the previous Clyde Field record of 3,952 set on Sept. 16, 2019 against BYU.
"The community really showed up for us tonight and we're grateful they packed Clyde Field," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "BYU is a very good team and nothing but credit to them. We were poor in the final attacking third and we were poor in our defensive third as well. It's a weird one when you have more shots, you have equal possession, you have more corner kicks, and you lose by five. Unfortunately, the only stat that matters is the scoreboard and BYU absolutely dominated us in that regard."
BYU took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute after Brecken Mozingo broke loose in the box and sent a shot across the line.
BYU's Ellie Boren sent a corner kick in from the left side in the 21st minute and Allie Fryer headed into the goal to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage.
The Cougars went up 3-0 in the 34th minute after Erin Bailey broke away and found the net for BYU's third goal of the half.
Utah Valley got on the scoreboard in the 36th minute after
Heather Stainbrook sent a free kick from 30 yards out on the left side of the field to
Sadie Beardall who headed it into the back of the net to get the Wolverines on the scoreboard.
BYU got a goal back in the 38th minute after Tara Warner sent a ball into the box which deflected off a UVU player to Bailey who then sent the ball into the goal to give the Cougars a 4-1 lead.
Boren scored in the 62nd minute to give BYU a 5-1 lead. BYU's Ellie Walbruch then settled a loose ball in the box and sent a shot into the net to secure the 6-1 win for BYU.
Utah Valley outshot BYU 21-18 on the night with the Cougars holding a 9-8 advantage on shots on goal. UVU had eight corner kicks to BYU's six.
Hannah Lee led UVU with a match-best seven shots, including one on frame.
Ruby Hladek had six shots, while Stainbrook had three.
Defensively,
Idalia Serrano and
Leah Wolf each played a half in the box. Wolf finished with two saves while Serrano had one.
Utah Valley now heads out on the road for two matches in Southern California. UVU will take on No. 19 USC on Thursday, Sept. 7 in Los Angeles before playing Long Beach State on Sunday, Sept. 10 in Long Beach. UVU's next home match will be on Sept. 28 against Stephen F. Austin.
