Heather Stainbrook and
Manthy Brady recorded second-half braces while the Wolverine defense picked up the clean sheet to lead Utah Valley to a 4-0 shutout road win over WAC foe Grand Canyon on Sunday afternoon at GCU Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona.
Utah Valley improves to 4-3-4 overall and 1-0-1 in WAC play. The Wolverines extend their unbeaten streak to five games. UVU has not lost a match since falling to nationally ranked BYU on Sept. 2. UVU hands Grand Canyon just its second loss of the season at home as the Lopes fall to 7-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in WAC play.
"It was an unbelievable collective and composed team effort today," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "I thought we were very mature with our possession. Everyone that traveled with us on this trip contributed to the win today. In the final third we created and finished our chances. This is a big one for us. Grand Canyon is a very good team. We're excited about the scoring and the shutout."
Utah Valley got on the scoreboard in the 48th minute after
Ruby Hladek sent a nice lead pass to
Faith Webber on the right side. Webber then avoided a pair of GCU defenders and passed it to the middle of the box where Stainbrook then fired it into the net to give UVU a 1-0 lead.
Quincy Bonds got past a defender on the right side near the end line and managed to send a pass to Brady just inside the box. Brady then made a move to the left and fired a shot into the goal with the left foot to put the Wolverines up 2-0 in the 70th minute.
Grand Canyon was called on a hand ball just inside the box to give the Wolverines a penalty kick in the 74th minute. Stainbrook capitalized on the GCU penalty, sending the PK into the net to give Utah Valley a 3-0 lead. The goal secured Stainbrook her brace on the day.
Brady registered her brace in the 78th minute as
Elle Young sent the ball into the box from midfield where Brady rebounded a deflected ball off the GCU keeper at the top of the box and sent it into the goal to secure the Wolverines a 4-0 win.
Utah Valley outshot Grand Canyon 15-8 on the day with a 7-3 advantage on shots on goal. UVU had 10 corner kicks to GCU's three.
Stainbrook led UVU with a match-high five shots, including four on frame. Webber had four shots with one on goal. Brady had three shots with two on frame, while Young had two shots.
CJ Graham picked up the win in the box, playing 83 minutes with three saves. Graham secured the combined shutout with
Leah Wolf in goal. The Utah Valley defense picks up its second shutout of the season.
Utah Valley travels back to Orem to continue WAC play next week at Clyde Field. The Wolverines will host Stephen F. Austin on Thursday before welcoming UTRGV on Saturday. UVU's match against SFA on Thursday will kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
