PORTLAND — The Utah Valley men's soccer team was defeated by the No. 6 Portland Pilots, falling on the road 6-0 at Merlo Field in Portland.
The sixth-ranked Pilots were as good as advertised, dominating the Wolverines on both sides of the ball. Portland out-shot Utah Valley 16-4, including a 12-1 mark on goal.
The Pilots jumped in front when Buba Fofanah dribbled his way through the penalty area before putting an off-balance shot into the back of the net.
Utah Valley held Portland at bay for the next 25 minutes, but the Pilots were able to add two more goals in the 34th and 38th minutes to take a 3-0 lead into intermission.
Portland pulled further away in the second half with goals in the 55th, 63rd, and 80th minutes. Ben Ortiz put the Wolverines' lone shot on goal in the 67th minute, but it was dealt with easily by the keeper.
The win was the Pilots' 13th-consecutive win at home, dating back to the 2021 season.
Utah Valley heads to Southern California for a pair of games against Big West opposition. The Wolverines will look to avenge a 5-1 defeat last season when they face the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Saturday. Utah Valley will then head to San Luis Obispo to take on Cal Poly the following Tuesday. Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live stats available at UVUStats.com.
