OPENING TIP
Utah Valley University will host WAC leader Grand Canyon University to wrap up the current three-game homestand on Thursday at 6 p.m. MT in the UCCU Center. The game will air live on ESPN+. The Wolverines (6-9, 1-5) notched a win in WAC play last Saturday over UT Rio Grande Valley behind career nights in scoring from Tessa Chaney and Kylee Mabry. Chaney also had 11 rebounds to record her first career double-double. UVU enters this week tied for ninth in the overall WAC standings and seventh in the WAC Resume Seeding standings.
LAST TIME OUT
Chaney's first career double-double helped lead Utah Valley to a 75-62 win over UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday afternoon in the UCCU Center. Chaney finished with a career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds, Mabry matched her career-high 17 points, and Eleyana Tafisi scored a season-high 15. Chaney was 6-for-6 from the field and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line while Tafisi finished with six rebounds and five assists as UVU dished out 20 assists on the night. Ally Criddle finished with nine points, Tahlia White had eight points and a career-best six rebounds, and Liana Kaitu'u had five rebounds and four steals.
The lead was five with just over three minutes to go until the break when Tafisi hit a jumper to start an 11-2 run to end the half. Chaney had a bucket and a free throw for a 3-point play during the run that put Utah Valley up 33-19 at the break.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
Grand Canyon enters the week atop the WAC standing at 14-3 overall and 6-0 in league play, and is also the top team in the WAC resume seeding system. Trinity San Antonio leads a trio of players in double figures at 11.9 points per game while former Wolverine Shay Fano is scoring 6.1 per contest for the Lopes. GCU leads the WAC in several categories, including scoring defense, allowing just 54.4 points per game which ranks 18th in the country. Grand Canyon leads the all-time series 15-8 as the two teams split the season series last year, both winning at home. Over the last eight games, the teams have gone 4-4. The Wolverines are 6-6 at home against the Lopes all-time.
