Drake Allen scored 13 points while
Tanner Toolson and
Caleb Stone-Carrawell each had 11 to lead Utah Valley in a 78-65 road loss to WAC leader Grand Canyon on Thursday night at Global Credit Union Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.
The game wraps up a three-game road swing for the Wolverines who fall to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in WAC play. Grand Canyon, who is receiving votes in the Top-25, extends the nation's third longest win streak to 14 games and improves to 17-1 overall and 7-0 in WAC play.
Allen scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half. He connected on 5 of 12 shots from the field and hit 3 of 5 shots at the free throw line. He also pulled down four rebounds to go along with three steals.
Toolson scored his 11 points on a 4 of 11 clip from the floor, including a 3 of 7 mark from long range. He also had a pair of steals. Stone-Carrawell knocked down four shots from the field, including one from long range for his 11 points. He also had a team-high seven rebounds with one steal.
K'mani Doughty had seven points, while
Ethan Potter and
Trevin Dorius each had six.
Utah Valley shot 35.7% (20-56) from the floor with a 28.6% (4-14) mark from long range. Grand Canyon shot 52.9% (27-51) from the field with a 47.4% (9-19) clip from beyond the arc. UVU forced GCU into 21 turnovers and scored 21 points off those turnovers.
Utah Valley now returns to Orem to host in-state WAC foe Utah Tech on Saturday afternoon at the UCCU Center. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and over the air waves on ESPN 960 AM radio.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The two teams played to a 5-5 tie through the first three minutes of the game. Grand Canyon then used a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 19-5 lead with 12:50 on the clock. Utah Valley responded right back with a 9-1 run over the next three minutes to cut the lead to six points, 20-14, with 9:48 to play in the half. The Lopes then went on a 12-1 run over a 5:31 span to extend their lead to 17 points, 32-15, with 5:16 to go. GCU then outscored UVU 13-10 over the final 5:18 to take a 20-point, 45-25, lead into halftime.
Second Half
Grand Canyon held on to its 20-point advantage through the first six minutes of the second half, 56-36, with 14 minutes to play.
Ethan Potter knocked down back-to-back buckets to spark a 7-1 UVU run to cut the GCU lead to 14 points, 57-43, with 10:49 on the clock. GCU's McGlothan scored six straight points for the Lopes as part of a 9-3 run over the next four minutes to retake a 20-point lead, 66-46, with 6:42 remaining in the game. The Wolverines countered with a 10-3 run over the next 3:35 to cut the GCU lead to 13 points, 69-56, with 3:47 to play. GCU pushed the lead back to 18 points, 74-56, with 2:20 to go. UVU did cut the lead to just 11 points two times but couldn't get any closer as GCU took the 78-65 win.
