Utah Valley improves to 3-1 in WAC play with 80-62 win over in-state foe Southern Utah

OREMCaleb Stone-Carrawell scored 17 points to lead three other Wolverines in double figures in an 80-62 win over in-state foe Southern Utah on Saturday afternoon at the UCCU Center. 
 
Utah Valley wins its second straight WAC game to improve to 8-7 overall and 3-1 in league play. Southern Utah falls to 5-10 overall and 0-4 in WAC play. 
 
Stone-Carrawell knocked down 7 of 14 shots from the field, including a shot from long range. He also went 2 for 2 at the free throw line for his team-high 17 points. The redshirt senior also pulled down five rebounds with three assists and one block. 
 
Drake Allen scored his 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting with a 4 of 4 clip at the free throw line. Allen was just one assist shy of a double-double with nine dimes. He also had four rebounds and one block on the day. 
 
Trevin Dorius was just one rebound shy of a second straight double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. He also had one block and a steal. Tanner Toolson also scored 14 points to go along with seven rebounds. 
 
As a team, Utah Valley dished out 19 assists on its 28 made baskets. The Wolverines outrebounded SUU 43-34 and outscored the T-Birds 42-30 in the paint. 
 
UVU shot 45.9% (28-61) from the field with a 22.2% (2-9) clip from long range. The Wolverines knocked down 22 of 26 shots at the free throw line for an 84.6% mark. UVU held SUU to 36.5% (23-63) shooting. 
 
Utah Valley now heads out on the road for three straight WAC games, starting with UT Arlington on Thursday, Jan. 11 in Arlington, Texas. UVU's next home game is on Jan. 20 against in-state foe Utah Tech. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Half
Tanner Toolson and Dorius each hit a couple of shots to open the game, leading Utah Valley to a 10-4 lead through the first 3:33 of the game. The Wolverines then extended the lead to eight points, 15-7, with 14 minutes to go in the half. Southern Utah responded with a 9-2 run over the next 3:24 to get within one point, 17-16, with 10:44 on the clock. The Wolverines then scored nine of the next 13 points to take a 26-20 lead with seven minutes to go. SUU then used a 10-4 run over the next two minutes to tie the game, 30-30, with five minutes to go in the half. Jaden McClanahan knocked down a three and Allen put in an alley-oop from K'mani Doughty to give UVU a 35-30 lead with 1:36 to go in the half. SUU responded with an 8-0 run over the final 1:36 to take a 38-35 lead into the break.  
 
2nd Half
The two teams played evenly through the first four minutes of the second half as SUU held on to its three-point lead, 44-41, with 16 minutes to play. Allen then scored and was fouled. He knocked down the free throw to tie the game, 44-44, with 15:48 on the clock. The two teams then played through four ties and four lead changes over the next 2:20 en route to a 52-52 tie with 12:52 to play. The Wolverines then knocked down six straight free throws as part of an 11-0 UVU run over the next 5:20 to give the Wolverines a 62-52 lead with 7:32 to go. The Wolverines outscored SUU 18-10 the rest of the way to secure the 80-62 win.
