Box Score OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University defeated Seattle University, 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-23) on Monday night inside Lockhart Arena.
Sami Blackett finished with a match-high 16 kills, three aces, and six digs for UVU (12-6, 3-3).
Madi Standifird made her first start of the year and finished with 13 kills, while setting a new career-high in the category for the second time this season. Arianna Bilby recorded 12 kills to lead Seattle U (3-13, 1-5) in the loss.
"It was a fun night tonight!! It's great to be home and to play in front of our fans. So excited for Madi, Molly, and Grace, who stepped up and played well in a role we needed them to play in. The Wolverines scored nine straight points early in the first set, fueled by
Madi Standifird, who finished the first frame with eight kills on 11 swings. She had four consecutive points during the 10-1 run all with Blackett holding the serve. The run ended with one of Blackett's two aces in the first.
Eliza Hakes finished with four kills during the set and helped UVU push their lead out to 17-10 before she helped Utah Valley to a 25-15 victory with two kills and a service ace from
Lani Matavao.
Steliyana Chakarova led the charge with a 6-0 run to break an 11-11 tie and put UVU in front 14-11 after three consecutive kills. Wooden and Blackett joined in the action during the run. Seattle U fought back, though, with a 4-0 run to get their deficit down to 16-15. The Wolverines responded with a kill, and later, Chism won a joust at the net for a 19-16 lead. Following the Redhawk run that tied the set at 20-20 before, Utah Valley took advantage of a pair of service errors before getting a service ace of their own from Matavao and a kill from Blackett to go up 2-0.
Utah Valley got off to a 4-1 lead in the third set before the Redhawks came back to take a 9-8 lead after a kill from Bilby. They pushed the lead out to 13-10 before UVU started to rally with a kill before
Molly Cummard had one of her two service aces in the match cut the lead to one. The combination of Chism, Blackett, and Standifird converted on three consecutive kills to make it 15-14, Wolverines. The set remained close, and it looked like Seattle U was going to force a fifth set and lead 23-21 before a 4-0 run swung the set into UVU's favor.
Cummard finished with three assists, two aces, and nine digs in the win. Chism recorded her 16
th double-double and tenth of the season; it marks the fifth straight contest where the sophomore has reached at least ten in two stats categories. She finishes with six kills, 38 assists, 11 digs and three blocks.
The Wolverines have now won 13 in a row against Seattle U and 14 consecutive sets in matches played in Orem.
The Wolverines host Abilene Christian on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 6:00 p.m. MT, inside Lockhart Arena before hosting California Baptist on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 1:00 p.m. MT to close out the homestand. UVU travels next week to Grand Canyon before returning to host WAC leader, UT Arlington.
