OPENING TIP
Utah Valley University continues its perfect start to the season on Wednesday at 6 p.m. MT against Park University Gilbert in the UCCU Center. Wednesday's game begins a four-game homestand that has the Wolverines (2-0) also hosting CSU Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. MT.Â
The Wolverines are coming off of a 64-61 road win at Kennesaw State in the WAC/CUSA Challenge last Saturday in Georgia. Saige Gibb's late-game heroics sent UVU home with a win. She scored and was fouled with just 3.1 seconds left to break a 61-61 tie en route to the Wolverines' first 2-0 start since 2020. A win in Wednesday's game would give the Wolverines their best start since the team opened 9-0 in 2007-08 and also received votes in the AP Top 25.Â
Through two games, UVU is led in scoring by Kylee Mabry and Kendra Kitchen, who average 11.0 points per game while Danja Stafford Collins is at 10.5 points and 10.5 rebounds. She was named the WAC Newcomer of the Week on Monday.Â
MVP (MOST VALUABLE PROFESSOR) NIGHT
During halftime of Wednesday's game, 19 UVU professors will be honored as MVP's (Most Valuable Professors) as selected by UVU student-athletes.Â
LAST TIME OUT
Saige Gibb scored, was fouled, and knocked down a free throw with just 3.1 seconds left to lift Utah Valley University to a 64-61 road win at Kennesaw State University on Saturday night at the KSU Convocation Center.Â
KSU had tied the game on a 3-pointer from Kailyn Fields with 8.9 seconds left, setting up the final play that saw Gibb drive to the hoop, score on an underhand scoop while also taking a hit to the arm on her way in. The Owls had one last chance but didn't have a timeout to advance the ball and the desperation look hit off the backboard.
Mabry led UVU with 16 points and six steals while Stafford Collins had her first double-double in a Wolverine uniform with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Amanda Barcello added nine points and a three steals while Ally Criddle finished with eight points before fouling out. Gibb finished with five points off the bench while also collecting a pair of steals. Â
