OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University reached the century mark for the first time since 2014 in a 100-37 win over Park University Gilbert on Wednesday night in the UCCU Center. The Wolverines (3-0) are now off to their best start since the 2007-08 season when the team won nine straight to start the season.
UVU set program records for assists in a game (33) and blocks in a game (12) while reaching triple digits for the first time since Nov. 14, 2014, when they put up 109 against Bristol.
"It's a long season so it's good to have games like this where we can work some kinks out and get some of our younger kids some time. Our starters got us up early and even though the second quarter was a little rusty I thought the second half was great," said head coach Dan Nielson.
"We had kids get some big minutes and really play well defensively against a team that's well coached, and they spread you out and shoot it a lot. I thought we did what we were supposed to do. We met our defensive standards, and it was fun to see some shots going in."
UVU had several different players fill up the stat sheet in different categories. Saige Gibb led all scorers with a career-high 17 points as she and Amanda Barcello both made five 3-pointers with the team hitting 13 overall. Tessa Chaney finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks on 6-for-8 from the field while Kennedy Carlyle blocked a game-high five shots.
Cambree Blackham finished with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, and three steals while her sister, Ally Criddle, dished out eight assists and nabbed seven steals in just 13 minutes of action. Danja Stafford Collins added 10 points in 10 minutes, while Halle Nelson and Aspen Caldwell scored nine points each. Caldwell added five assists and six steals, with Nelson also snagging six boards and four steals on a night the Wolverines had 25 steals and forced 31 turnovers, leading to 39 points.
Barcello buried a corner three on the first possession to get UVU started as the Wolverines jumped ahead 9-0 less than two minutes in to force a Park timeout. She hit another 3-pointer right out of the timeout as UVU scored the first 19 points of the game while converting on their first eight attempts from the floor. The Wolverines had nine different players score in the first quarter and led 29-9 after one.
All 11 available players played, and scored, in the opening half. Barcello led all players with nine in the opening half while Blackham had eight. Caldwell scored her first bucket as a Wolverine in the first quarter and Carlyle's first collegiate basket came early in the second. Utah Valley stretched the lead to 48-23 at the half.
The Wolverines extended the lead to 73-29 after three quarters. In the third, Blackham had all five of her assists while Halle Nelson chipped in five of her nine points in the quarter.
UVU had a 46-18 advantage on points in the paint and the bench scored 54 points for the Wolverines. The Wolverines were 37-for-81 (45.7%) from the field and made 13-of-32 (40.6%) from three. Park was just 14-for-57 (24.6%) overall. The 63-point margin of victory is also the largest under Nielson and the biggest win since a 114-27 win over Walla Walla during the 2013-14 season.
Next up, Utah Valley will host CSU Bakersfield on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT in the UCCU Center.
