Utah Valley closes out regular season with Tarleton State and Southern Utah

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley women's volleyball will close out the regular season this week with a pair of matches inside Lockhart Arena. The Wolverines will host Tarleton State (7-20, 2-12) on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 6:00 p.m. MT before wrapping up the regular season with Southern Utah (10-15, 6-8) on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Noon.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley finished 1-1, picking up their sixth win over Abilene Christian in six tries in a five-set match on Thursday. Avery Shewell finished with a career-high 29 kills, and Sami Blackett added 27 as UVU came back from a 2-1 deficit. Setter Evalyn Chism recorded her fifth match with 50 or more assists with a career-high 58. On Saturday, they fell to UT Arlington despite a close first opening set before the first-place Mavericks pulled away.

ABOUT THE TEXANS
Tarleton State enters the contest 7-20 and 2-12 in the WAC. They are currently in last place and trying to claim one of the final two spots in the WAC Tournament. Senior Allison Bryant leads them with 387 kills this season and will be aided by Setter Megan Hodges with 685 assists and 25 service aces. Middle blocker Emma Burke has blocked 110 balls this season and has been hitting .295.
 
ABOUT THE THUNDERBIRDS
The Wolverines hold a 12-2 all-time record over Southern Utah, who enters the contest in fifth place in the WAC with a 6-8 record and 10-15 overall. Andrea Spasojevic has been good from the service line with 29 aces and has tallied 258 kills. Setter Teniyah Leuluai won the WAC Setter of the Week award a couple of weeks ago and leads them with 811 assists.
 
RECORD WATCH
Utah Valley has several climbing UVU's all-time career ranks and individual marks. Avery Shewell is climbing into the top 10 in many categories, including career kills, points, solo blocks, and aces. Sami Blackett is chasing single-season records in kills and points. Bella Wooden has a chance to break the single-season solo block record and block assists and is chasing Madison Dennison's total block record.
 
THANK YOU SENIORS
UVU will honor two seniors prior to the match on Thursday night: Jules Fink and Charity Wilson. Fink first joined the Wolverines for the 2021 season and helped them to the NCAA Tournament. She earned a spot on the WAC All-Freshman Team and earned Academic All-WAC honors twice. Wilson joined UVU last season and recorded a career-high seven kills and nine points against Stephen F. Austin.

The Wolverines will travel next week for the Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament in Arlington, Texas, from Nov. 21-23. GoUVU.com will have an updated schedule and brackets when the tournament field is completed.
