12/17/2024 12:54:00 PM

OREM, Utah – College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced the 2024 Volleyball Academic All-District honors on Tuesday afternoon. Avery Shewell, Evalyn Chism, Lani Matavao, and Bella Wooden earned annual honors.

Shewell earned first-team All-WAC honors for the first time in her UVU career in 2024 while setting career-highs with 431 kills and 4.03 kills per set to help lead the Wolverines' offense. The Criminal Justice major holds a 3.97 GPA and was the Female Perry Homes Scholar-Athlete of the Year last season. She won the WAC Player of the Week and earned MVP honors at the Ellesyn Invitational in Montana, where she recorded 16 kills against Montana and Southern Miss to finish with 45 on the weekend.

Chism holds a 3.75 GPA in UVU's Elementary Education program. It's her first honor by CSC after earning second-team All-WAC honors during the season. She finished with the third most assists in a single season with 1,213 and is now sixth all-time with 1,642 during her two seasons in Orem. The sophomore won five WAC Setter of the Week awards during the season and set a new career-high with 58 assists against Abilene Christian.

The Preseason WAC Libero of the Year, Matavao, finished the season with 470 digs, the ninth-best single-season total by a libero. The three-time WAC libero of the Week is now No. 11 all-time in digs and will look to climb into the top 10 in 2025. She set a new career-high with 26 digs in matches against Tarleton State and later against Utah Tech. In the classroom, she holds a 3.62 GPA in the School Health Education program at Utah Valley.

One of the best blockers in the country this season, Wooden set UVU's single-season total blocks record with 196. Her 22 solo blocks were one shy of tying Lauren Bakker's record from the 2014 season, and her 174 block assists were five shy of Makaila Jarema's record in 2018. She won WAC Player of the Week for her performance in Georgia, where she had six kills and six total blocks in a sweep of Jacksonville before adding 11 against Boston College and ten in the tournament finale against Georgia.  Her best matches of the season, the UVU middle blocker, finished with 13 total blocks in the Old Hammer Rivalry against Utah Tech, a true dual threat; she is enrolled in Health Sciences at Utah Valley with a 3.82 GPA.

To be considered for the Academic All-District Team, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 and either play in 90% of the team sets or start in 66% of the team's matches. Schools are limited to four nominations each year.

The College Sports Communicators Academic All-America team will be announced on Jan. 14.
