RENO, Nev. – Talen Eck, Tanner Frothinger, and Tanner Lofthouse all placed on Sunday at the Reno Tournament of Champions. Yusief Lillie was one of 13 who competed unattached and independent of UVU, finished third in the 125 bracket of the tournament.
 
The Wolverines had a good run at 125, with Eck finishing 4-1 on the day and recording a pair of falls to open the day before a loss in the quarterfinals dropped him to the consolation rounds, where he picked right up with a technical fall of Jackson Eyler of Eastern Oregon. He won the fifth place bout over Oregon State's Hunter Taylor by decision.
 
His 125-pound counterpart, Lillie, finished 4-1, earning a pair of dominant victories by tech fall and a pin in 2:29 to reach the quarterfinals. He was the only one to reach the semifinals, where he fell to the eventual champion, Aden Reeves (Grand View). Lillie earned his first major decision of the day to take home third, defeating Vonn Fenn of Southern Oregon.
 
A pair of Tanners also placed at the "Toughest Tournament in the USA."  Frothinger went 4-1 at 149 to place sixth in the field. He won his first match of the day by technical fall before Oklahoma State's Cutter Sheets beat the Nebraska transfer to put him into the consolation rounds. He beat a pair of UVU teammates, first defeating Smokey McClure, who competed unattached and then knocked out Q'Veli Quintanilla with a hard-fought 2-1 decision that was decided on an escape early in the third period. His final bout went to sudden victory, where he earned a 17-14 decision over Daniel Heard. His fifth-place match was declared a no-contest.
 
Lofthouse also finished 4-1 in the tournament to place sixth after working through the consolation rounds after losing to Wyoming's Ethan Ducca. He earned victories over a pair of Division I opponents, starting with Cal Poly's Jake Honey following wins over Logan Cole, who competed unattached from the University of Missouri, and Graham Gambrall (Oregon State) by a 5-2 decision. His fifth-place match was declared a no-contest against Quayin Short of Wyoming.
 
Competing attached for the Wolverines, Trevor Frank finished 3-2, including a major decision in his opening round match of Honey (Cal Poly). Quintanilla's run ended with a 2-2, after going 2-0 to reach the quarterfinals.
 
The Wolverines will take a holiday break and begin Big 12 dual action, starting with California Baptist on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 6:00 p.m. MT in the Lockhart Arena.
