Wolverines Shatter Scoring Records in 119-59 Rout of Bethesda

OREMTanner Toolson led five Utah Valley players in double figures as the Wolverines cruised to a record-setting 119-59 win over Bethesda on Saturday afternoon at the UCCU Center to wrap up non-conference play.

The 119 points are the most scored by Utah Valley in the UCCU Center, surpassing the previous mark of 113 set against Stephen F. Austin on March 3, 2023. The Wolverines also set a school record with 49 made field goals, eclipsing the previous record of 44 set against Bethesda on Dec. 14, 2017.

"It was really good," said Utah Valley head coach Todd Phillips. "Really proud of the night. They took the right shots. I think we had 32 assists, and that's a big thing—playing the right way."

Utah Valley finishes non-league play with an 8-6 record and now shifts its focus to Western Athletic Conference action, starting with three straight home games, beginning Jan. 4 against Abilene Christian.

Toolson scored a team-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. He added five rebounds, one assist, and a block.

Ethan Potter was perfect from the field, going 9-for-9 en route to 19 points, including 1-of-1 from beyond the arc. He also pulled down eight rebounds and recorded two blocks.

"Noah Taitz is a really good three-point shooter," said Phillips. "He hit three of four tonight, Trevan hit three of four, and Tanner was five of eight. Those are the right guys taking the majority of those threes, and that's really important going into league play."

Taitz notched a career-high 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting, connecting on 3-of-4 from deep. He added four rebounds and two steals.

Hayden Welling contributed 15 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks, while Osiris Grady recorded a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double with three assists and two blocks.

"Noah's been injured for the last probably year and a half. We recruited him to be a shooter, and that's what we need him to do—come in and knock down shots. Really proud of him tonight, and I felt really good for him as well."

The Wolverines shot a blistering 68.1% (49-of-72) from the field and 54.2% (13-of-24) from long range while holding Bethesda to 33.8% (24-of-71) shooting. UVU dominated the boards with a 48-24 rebounding edge and outscored the Lion Angels 66-22 in the paint. The team also dished out 32 assists on its 49 field goals.

"After the layoff, you just never know what's going to happen," Phillips added. "It's so important to get the guys some rest, but as a coach, you're nervous. We've had basically a day and a half of practice, so I'm proud of how we played tonight."
