USAFA, Colo. — Kylee Mabry scored a career-high 21 points, but Utah Valley University fell behind and couldn't recover at Air Force, losing 76-58 on Wednesday night in Clune Arena. The Wolverines dropped to 6-3 on the season, while the Falcons improved to 8-1 and are off to their best start since the 1982-83 season.
Mabry was 8-for-14 from the field and hit each of her three attempts from three.
Gracie Sorenson and
Danja Stafford Collins each added eight points for the Wolverines with Stafford Collins also grabbing eight rebounds. The Wolverines were hurt by 26 turnovers that Air Force took advantage of, scoring 33 points off the giveaways.
Milahnie Perry had 22 points to lead the Falcons with Keelie O'Hollaren adding 13 and Madison Smith finished with 11. Air Force shot 51.9% (27-for-52) for the game and was also 10-for-24 (41.7%) from three. UVU was 21-for-49 from the field and hit four of the 10 3-pointers they attempted.
Air Force hit its first four shots of the game, two coming from beyond the arc, to jump ahead 10-0 just three minutes in. UVU missed its first four shots and turned it over five times before
Cambree Blackham scored to get the Wolverines on the board with 3:32 to go in the first.
Air Force followed with back-to-back triples to extend it 16-2 before Sorenson sparked a 6-0 run to get UVU back within eight, 16-8. Sorenson hit two from the line and scored down low, followed by two from Mabry. A late 3-point-play from Jordyn Devaughn with under 10 seconds left in the quarter pushed it back to 11, 19-8, after one.
The Falcons scored 12 points off eight UVU turnovers in the first quarter and took a 27-12 lead early in the second with four more points coming off Wolverine miscues. Stafford Collins sparked another quick 6-0 Wolverine spurt with a pair of makes to get it back within nine, 27-18, but Air Force rattled eight of the last nine points in the quarter to carry a 35-19 lead into the break.
Air Force stretched lead to as much as 20 in the third quarter before the Wolverines got things going offensively over the last three minutes. White scored five and Mabry had four as the Wolverines created extra opportunities by turning the Falcons over nine times in the quarter. UVU closed the last 2:40 of the third on a 14-2 run to make it 53-45 after three.
The Falcons scored the first five points of the fourth, all coming from Perry, and were able to push it back to 18, 65-47, behind a 12-2 start to the quarter to put the game out of reach.
The Wolverines are now off until next Tuesday when they travel to BYU for a 7 p.m. tip inside the Marriott Center in Provo.
