Caleb Stone-Carrawell scored 15 points and
Tanner Toolson added 14 to lead Utah Valley in an 86-67 setback to WAC leader Grand Canyon on Saturday afternoon at the UCCU Center.
Utah Valley falls to 9-13 overall and 4-7 in WAC play, while Grand Canyon improves to 21-2 overall and 11-1 in league play.
"It was a rough second half for us and Grand Canyon did a heck of a job," said Utah Valley head coach
Todd Phillips. "They went 6 of 6 from three and every time they had an open shot, they hit it. I liked our game plan going in and I thought we did a pretty good job in the first half. We were right there in the first half. We made a run to cut it to four points in the second half, but Grand Canyon hits some threes, and we missed some easy ones."
Stone-Carrawell scored his 15 points on a 6 of 17 clip from the field, including a 3 of 9 mark from long range. He also pulled down six rebounds with two assists and a block.
Toolson connected on 4 of 11 shots from the field, all from beyond the arc, for his 14 points. He also tallied five rebounds with one assist and a block.
Trevin Dorius was just one rebound shy of a double double with 12 points and nine rebounds. He also recorded a career-high five blocks.
Drake Allen scored nine points with seven assists, three rebounds, and a steal.
Ethan Potter came off the bench to score six points with five rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Utah Valley shot 37.3% (25-67) from the field with a 31.8% (7-22) mark from 3-point range. UVU shot 52.6% (10-19) from the free throw line. Grand Canyon shot a 42.9% (27-63) clip from the field with a 40.9% mark (9-22) from long range.
Utah Valley outrebounded Grand Canyon 45-43 on the day and outscored the Lopes 28-26 in the paint.
Utah Valley will continue play at home next week against Tarleton State on Thursday and Abilene Christian on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Grand Canyon took a 6-5 lead through the first six minutes of the game. The Lopes then extended their lead to six points, 12-6, but Utah Valley rallied with a 5-2 run over the next three minutes to cut the Lope lead back to three points, 14-11, with 10 minutes on the clock. The Lopes then scored six unanswered to take a 20-11 lead with 5:40 remaining in the half. The Wolverines responded right back with 10 of the next 13 points to cut the GCU lead to just two points, 23-11, with three minutes remaining. GCU responded with back-to-back threes to extend the lead to eight points, 29-21, with 1:53 to go. The Lopes scored three of the final five points to take a 32-23 lead into the break.
Second Half
Grand Canyon took an 11-point 38-27 lead before Utah Valley responded with an 8-2 run to cut the GCU lead to five points, 40-35, with 16 minutes on the clock. GCU then scored five of the next six to take a 46-36 lead. Stone-Carrawell then knocked down a three to spark an 8-2 UVU run over the next two minutes to cut the lead to just four points, 48-44, with 13:28 to go. The Lopes responded with six unanswered to retake a 10-point, 54-44, lead with 12:20 on the clock. GCU then knocked down three shots from long range as part of a 17-8 run over a 5:12 span to extend its lead to 19 points, 71-52, with 7:22 on the clock. The Lopes maintained their lead through the final seven minutes to secure the 86-67 win.
