OREM, Utah – Utah Valley wrestling fell on Saturday night 33-3 to No. 11 South Dakota State inside the Lockhart Arena. Haiden Drury picked up the lone victory for the Wolverines (2-4, 1-4) with a 2-0 decision over Caleb Gross. South Dakota State (11-2, 5-0) earned victories by seven of their ranked wrestlers in the dual.
 
The Jackrabbits won the dual's first two matches with No. 18 Tanner Jordan and No. 17 Derrick Cardinal coming up with decisions at 125 and 133 to put South Dakota State in front 6-0.
 
The Wolverines got on the board when Drury won their only match of the evening. He scored the only two points of the bout with a second-period reversal. Despite numerous attempts from Caleb Gross in the third period, he was able to hold on for the win. It marks his third consecutive victory after knocking off ranked wrestlers No. 31 Cole Brooks (Wyoming) and No. 28 Gavin Drexler (NDSU) in the dual last night.
 
The Jackrabbits regained control when No. 21 Alek Martin (SDSU) defeated Isaiah Delgado 7-3. Martin took a 3-0 lead in the first period on a takedown before adding a reversal and an escape in the second to take a controlling lead 6-2.
 
South Dakota State won the 165, 174, and 184 matches, all with bonus point victories from Tanner Cook, No. 4 Cade DeVos, and No. 13 Bennett Berge.
 
The evening's highlight anticipated matchup between No. 5 Tanner Sloan and No. 17 Evan Bockman saw the 2023 NCAA runner-up take an early 3-0 lead in the first period before he added a second-period escape and a riding time point for a 5-0 decision. The defeat is the first in dual action this year for Bockman.
 
The first period at heavyweight was filled with action as Luke Rasmussen (SDSU) went up 3-0 on a takedown before Chase Trussell responded with a quick reversal to make it 3-2. No wrestler scored until the SDSU product scored a third-period escape to clinch the 4-2 win.
 
The Wolverines return to action next week with duals against No. 19 Air Force on Friday, Feb. 9 at 7:00 p.m. MT before heading north to Greeley to wrestle No. 21 Northern Colorado on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 6:00 p.m. MT. Both duals will be streamed on FloWrestling.
