OREM, Utah — Megan Gibbs had a career game at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a grand slam and six RBIs to help propel Utah Valley (6-10) to an 11-3 win over Weber State (9-12) on Friday afternoon at Wolverine Softball Field. The Wolverines then fell 18-1 to Boise State (12-10) in the second game of the afternoon.
Gibbs' home run — a fly ball to the opposite field that cut through the wind — was part of a nine-run third inning rally that put the Wolverines up for good. Gibbs also plated two more in the fourth with a two-RBI single down the left field line that secured the run rule victory. Gibbs is the first Wolverine with six RBIs in a game since Kyla Hardy in 2021 against BYU.
Halle Morris had a strong day at the plate and in the circle. Morris went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs while allowing one ER in a complete game win. Rachael Brown continued her hot streak at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a two-RBI double.
GAME ONE
Morris pitched around some traffic in the first inning to keep the Wildcats off the board before retiring them in order in the second. WSU got on the board in the top of the third with a little help from the Wolverine defense, as a pair of errors led to a pair of runs for the 'Cats.
Utah Valley responded in a big way with a nine-run inning in the bottom of the third. The last time UVU scored nine or more runs in an inning was in 2018 when the Wolverines scored 13 against Southern Utah.
Amber Rodriguez started the rally with a double off the wall in right that was knocked down by the wind. Britney Moreno reached on an error by the pitcher that allowed Rodriguez to score. Brown then doubled Gibbs and Moreno home to give UVU the lead.
The Wolverines would go on to score six more runs in the inning — two on a double by Morris and four on the grand slam by Gibbs.
Morris worked around a two-out rally to keep the Wildcats off the board in the fourth. UVU then plated two more runs on a Gibbs single to left to push the lead to nine. Weber State would score one in the fifth, but stranded a runner at third that would've prolonged the game.
GAME TWO
Boise State scored early and often to take a commanding lead in the early innings. The Broncos scored 8 in the second and 5 in the third to take control of the game.
Peyton Hall was all the offense for the Wolverines, hitting a solo home run to left in the second for her second home run of the year.
