OREM, Utah — Megan Gibbs hit her 11th home run of the season, tying a personal best for a single season, as Utah Valley dropped its midweek game to the Utah State Aggies, 10-5 on Tuesday night at Wolverine Softball Field.
Gibbs led the Wolverine hitters, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Angelique Mann and Laynee Betancur each went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Amber Rodriguez went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Tuesday's game looked to be a back-and-forth affair after both sides put up three runs in the first inning, but the Aggies were able to pull away with a run in the second and four in the third.
After Utah State plated three in the top of the first, Utah Valley responded with three of their own via some ground attack softball. Ry Binne reached on a throwing error to start the rally, then five singles by Amber Rodriguez, Rachael Brown, Gibbs, Mann, and Betancur turned into three runs for the Wolverines.
The Aggies retook the lead with five runs over the next two frames. Gibbs cut the deficit down to three with a two-run home run to left that scored Mya Higareda, but that was the closest UVU would get.
Utah State tacked on two more insurance runs in the fourth and the seventh, but the Aggies' Tess Bumiller was able to silence the Wolverine bats over the final four frames, allowing just three hits and two walks in that span.
Utah Valley will look to get back in the win column this weekend when the Wolverines host WAC foe Stephen F. Austin for the first-ever meetings between the two schools on the softball diamond. UVU will be hosting its first-ever Alumni Weekend for its softball alumni, with events and ceremonies scheduled throughout the weekend.
