SEATTLE — Utah Valley's season came to an end on Friday afternoon, as the third-seeded Wolverines dropped a heartbreaker to the second-seeded California Baptist Lancers, 5-4.
Utah Valley battled back from an early 4-0 deficit after the first inning to tie the game, but the Lancers pushed across a run in the sixth to take the lead for good.
The loss ends what proved to be an historic season for the Wolverines, with the team posting its most wins since 2013, second-best WAC win percentage, and the longest win streak since 2013.
The season also saw exemplary individual performances, with Megan Gibbs setting the single-season home run record, Avery Sapp tying for the most shutouts by a freshman in program history, and Peyton Hall winning the National Freshman of the Week award, the first national weekly award of any kind in Wolverine softball history.
California Baptist loaded the bases in the bottom of the first with a one-out double and a pair of walks to set the table for Maya Martinez, who blasted a grand slam to right center.
Utah Valley answered with a run of its own in the second inning with a two-out rally. Gibbs walked, then advanced to third on a single to right by Rachael Brown. Hall followed that up with a single through the right side to score Gibbs.
The first four Wolverines reached in the fifth to spark a three-run rally that tied the game at four. Hall and Angelique Mann each singled, then Ry Binne reached on a throwing error while laying down a sacrifice bunt. The throw sailed down the right field line, allowing Hall to score and Mann to take third.
Libbie Hawker dunked a single into shallow center to score Mann. Britney Moreno capped off the rally with a sacrifice fly to left on a sharp line drive.
The Lancers took the lead for good in the sixth with a pair of singles sandwiched around a sac bunt.
The Wolverines put two runners on in the seventh, but were unable to push them across. Mann singled and Hawker reached on a hit by pitch, but the next two hitters popped out.
