Todd Phillips has announced that Xavier University of Louisiana standout Cory Wells has transferred to Utah Valley and will play for the Wolverines this season.

Wells, a 200-pound, 6-foot-7 forward, played the last four seasons (2020-24) at Xavier University of Louisiana where he earned Red River Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2024. He averaged 12.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.0 blocks for the Gold Rush last season. He scored in double digits in 11 of the 15 games he played, including a season-best 24 points against LSU-Shreveport on Feb. 16. He shot 40.2% from the field, connecting on 72 of 179 shots. Wells led Xavier to an 82-28 record over his four years, leading the Gold Rush to three NAIA national tournament appearances and one conference championship.

The Murphy, Texas native prepped at Wylie High School where he earned All-District 10 and Second Team 6A honors. He helped WHS qualify for the playoffs his final three seasons with the team. He led the Pirates to a 32-7 record during his senior season (2019-20) and won five times in the Class 6A playoffs.Â

Wells, a grad transfer, will join the Wolverines for the 2024-25 season.
