MOSES LAKE, Wash.—Utah Valley golfer
Dane Huddleston continued an impressive summer by winning the 103rd Washington Men's Amateur Championship at The Links at Moses Pointe on Thursday with a three-round 14-under-par 202 (69-67-66). The win qualifies Huddleston for the 2024 U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club, Aug. 12-18.
Huddleston entered the final round two shots behind the leader but surged ahead with eight birdies and just two bogeys. His performance earned him a three-shot lead over the second-place finisher, Max Herendeen.
"It feels great to get the win," Huddleston told the Washington Golf Association following the championship. "Getting my name on the trophy with some pretty big names feels great. I hit a lot of fairways, and when you're hitting fairways, it makes golf easier. I got to attach pins, and things went well."
The Washington Men's Amateur is the state's longest-running continuously held golf championship, with a rich history that mirrors the development of Washington's golf community. Past champions include Fred Couples, Joel Dahmen, Alex Prugh, Brock Mackenzie, Kermit Zarley, and John Bodenhamer, among many others.
This Washington Amateur Championship qualifies Huddleston for the 2024 U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
"I'm pumped for the U.S. Amateur," Huddleston said. "I played in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball this year and got a taste of a USGA event, so I'm really excited."
"He was close to winning a bunch this past spring," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Curran. "It's great to see him get into the winner's circle. I'm super proud of him. He took down a bunch of great players. I can't wait to see him play in the U.S. Amateur this summer!"
Huddleston had an impressive first season with the Wolverines this past year, earning First Team All-WAC honors. He finished in a tie for seventh at the 2024 WAC Championship with a three-round score of 2-over-par 218 (71-74-73).
