OREM—Â
Faith Webber fired a shot into the back of the net in the 78th minute, and
Marie Quentel scored on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute to lift Utah Valley to a 2-0 shutout win over No. 3 ranked BYU in an exhibition match on Wednesday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Clyde Field.
Â
"I thought the second half was much better for us. We started to play at our pace a little bit more," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "Our effort and commitment in the second half were crucial for securing the win."
Â
UVU and BYU played to a 0-0 tie through the first 77 minutes before
Kate Shirts sent a ball to
Marie Quentel in the middle of the field. Quentel then found
Faith Webber near the top of the box. Webber fired a shot past the BYU keeper toward the far post in the 78th minute to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
Â
"It was going to be a dogfight. It got ugly a couple of times, but great teams find a way to win, and that's what we did in the second half," said Webber. "We came out composed, played soccer, and we won, just like we knew we would if we did that."
Quentel was fouled inside the box in the 83rd minute, earning a penalty kick. She sent the ball to the left side of the goal to give UVU a 2-0 lead and secure the win.
CJ Graham led the Wolverine defense to the shutout in the box, picking up eight saves in the win.
Â
BYU had 20 shots with eight on frame, while UVU tallied 10 shots with six on goal. BYU had seven corner kicks on the night to UVU's six. Webber led the Wolverines with three shots, all on frame. Quentel,
Nixan Jackson, and
Ashley Garcia each had two shots.
Â
"I mean, it doesn't matter to me that it's an exhibition. They were trying to win the game to the best of their ability, and obviously, we were trying to do the same thing," Lemay added. "In the community and with the rivalry between the two programs, I think it's a big moment for us. The support from the crowd was incredible for both sides and I appreciate all the support we got tonight. It means a lot to our program and our players."
Â
Utah Valley will continue preseason play with a final exhibition game on Saturday night against Idaho State at Clyde Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Wolverines will then officially open the season on the road against Big Ten foe Michigan on Aug. 15 in Ann Arbor.
