SPOKANE, Wash. —
Faith Webber recorded a brace with two first-half goals, and
CJ Graham made seven saves to secure a shutout, leading Utah Valley to a 3-0 road win over Gonzaga on Sunday afternoon at Luger Field.
With the win, Utah Valley wraps up its three-game road swing with two victories, improving to 4-4-1 on the season. Gonzaga drops to 3-4-1 with the loss.
"Our approach was to go back to the reason the players started playing the game—just for enjoyment," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "We wanted to drop all the stress and pressure and just focus on having a good time. That was the message in the pregame talk, and if they did that, I felt like we'd come out on the right side of it. That's exactly what happened today."
Mia Owens sent a pass to Webber just inside the top of the box in the 15th minute. Webber turned and fired a right-footed shot to the far post, out of the reach of the Gonzaga keeper, giving Utah Valley an early 1-0 lead.
Four minutes later,
Kate Shirts delivered a lead pass from midfield that bounced just inside the box. Webber softly chipped the ball over the charging Gonzaga keeper and into the net, extending UVU's lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute.
In the 75th minute, Shirts collected a pass in the middle of the field from
Ashley Garcia and played a through ball to
Sadie Beardall on the left side of the box. Beardall then sent a cross to
Quincy Bonds, who headed the ball home to secure the 3-0 win for UVU.
Despite being outshot 21-11, with a 7-6 edge in shots on goal for Gonzaga, the Wolverines made their chances count. Both teams had five corner kicks. Webber led all players with seven shots, five on goal.
Manthy Brady took two shots, while Shirts and Bonds each added one. Shirts finished with two assists, while Owens and Beardall each tallied one.
Graham earned her first shutout of the season, collecting seven saves to secure her second win of the year.
"Faith is a special player and had a special day with two goals," said Lemay. "CJ recording her first shutout of the year was exactly what we needed, and she was big-time for us. Both CJ and Faith had wonderful performances, and the result came because of it."
Utah Valley now returns home to Orem to host in-state rival Weber State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
